Lost Forehead Survivor Shares Her Story
A woman who endured a severe injury, losing her entire forehead, is reaching out to warn others about the dangers of putting their feet on the car dashboard.
Gráinne Kealy, originally from Ireland, hopes her experience will prevent others from going through a similar ordeal.
This life-changing event occurred back in 2006. At the tender age of 22, Kealy was seated in what seemed like a common position when disaster struck.

It was a cold day when her boyfriend’s jeep unexpectedly skidded on black ice, leading to a sudden crash. Kealy was lounging with her feet up against the dashboard.
This became dangerous when the airbags deployed at a high speed, thrusting her knees into her face and fracturing almost all her facial bones.
In an interview, she shared, “I thought resting my feet on the dashboard was more comfortable during the journey. My knees were violently driven into my face when the airbag exploded. It deploys at about 200mph.”
As a result, Kealy suffered debilitating injuries, including facial damage so extensive that her forehead needed to be surgically removed. She also experienced a cerebrospinal fluid leak and lost two teeth.
Her partner in the vehicle suffered only minor injuries, a true silver lining in this traumatic event.
Dealing with the aftermath of the accident was a formidable challenge for Kealy. Besides the physical hurdles, the emotional and mental battles were often overwhelming.
“Living day-to-day without a forehead for two years felt surreal. The excruciating process of adjusting to a changed appearance and the reactions from those around me were difficult to endure,” Kealy reflects.

In 2009, a significant milestone came as surgeons successfully fitted her with a ceramic forehead.

Soon after her recovery, Kealy chose to share her experience publicly. By showing images of her injuries, she aims to remind others about the risks involving dashboard lounging.
Kealy explains, “On commutes or watching shows, seeing people comfortably placing feet on dashboards deeply unsettles me. The idea someone might unknowingly mimic my mistake is frightening.”
She remarks, “It’s upsetting whenever celebrities post images with their feet on dashboards. Given their massive influence, these pictures send a careless message.”

Kealy’s mission has resonated globally, garnering widespread support.
“Messages of gratitude poured in from everywhere after sharing my story. I hope people remember their role as passengers includes more than buckling up. Self-preservation is vital during vehicular incidents.”
Although Kealy has encountered her fair share of negative remarks, the kindness she occasionally receives uplifts her spirits.
“Social media reactions have been quite the learning curve. While some comments sting, many others show compassion. Seeing comments tagging dashboard loungers gives me hope that my warning is working.”
Kealy continues to advocate against dashboard lounging, determined to use her tale as a life-saving lesson for others.
