Two promising young figure skaters have tragically been identified as among the youngest victims in the recent American Airlines plane crash.
The ill-fated flight took off from Wichita, Kansas and was en route to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when it tragically collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter. The time was around 9 p.m. on a Wednesday evening when the heartbreaking accident occurred.

In what is now known as one of the deadliest air disasters in over two decades in the United States, both aircraft plummeted into the Potomac River. Tragically, there were no survivors from the incident.
Among the 67 lives tragically lost were the young ice dancers, Angela Yang and Sean Kay. These talented youngsters were just 11 and 12 years old, offering so much promise to the figure skating world.
They were both part of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club and had been returning from the National Development Camp, which took place between January 20 to 26 in Kansas. This camp was a prestigious event aimed at nurturing top juvenile figure skating talents.
The skating community is mourning deeply as an obituary shared by their club noted that Yang and Kay were unbeaten in the juvenile ice dance this season. Their skills on the ice were commendable, evident from videos of their performances admired by fans and experts alike.
In November, the pair dazzled audiences, earning cheers and applause. These young stars were carving out quite the name for themselves, having won first place in several categories at the recent Midwestern Sectional Singles and US Ice Dance Championships in Texas.

Angela, inspired by her siblings playing ice hockey, embarked on ice skating, showing incredible promise. Meanwhile, Sean, who was celebrated for excelling in the Excel Juvenile Plus Boys category at the 2023 Excel Series Final, was becoming a known name within the community.
Just before the crash, Angela shared her excitement and joy about her experience at the camp on Instagram, stating, “Iโm really gonna miss my friends and all the great coaches! I canโt wait for next year!” It is heart-wrenching to think about her excitement and the great future that lay ahead.
Sadly, their coach, Alexandr “Sasha” Kirsanov, also perished in the accident. Known as a professional ice dancer, Kirsanov represented the US, Azerbaijan, and Russia throughout his career, securing a medal in 2003.

Natalia Gudin, Kirsanov’s widow, expressed her immense grief over the loss, underscoring the profound impact of this tragedy on her life and the skating community.
Other victims include Jinna Han and Spencer Lane, talented skaters from Boston, alongside their mothers. A poignant image of the doomed plane, shared by Lane before the flight, adds a layer of melancholy to this tragic story.
Also onboard were Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, a renowned ice-skating couple. They had left an indelible mark on the sport since their world championship win in 1994.
While fears initially spread about their son, Maxim, being on the flight, it was later confirmed he had left earlier to continue his journey home with another American figure skater.

This tragic crash has sent ripples across the skating world, touching many lives. Itโs an immense loss for those close to the victims and a sad day for the sport, remembering young hearts with immense passion and love for ice skating.
