How a Near-Miss Changed My Life for the Better

At the age of 45, my life seemed to unravel completely. My husband had decided to leave me, and to make matters worse, he turned my son against me. Struggling to make ends meet, I ended up taking a job as a cleaner. But the overwhelming stress from the divorce and the constant courtroom battles took a toll on me, and I eventually lost focus at work, leading to my dismissal.

Feeling utterly lost, I found myself wandering aimlessly through the streets. It was right after losing my job when I was suddenly blinded by bright headlights and startled by the screeching of brakes—it was a car speeding directly towards me! In complete shock, I tripped and fell into a muddy puddle. The car ground to a halt, inches from my face.

Separated, disgraced, jobless, and now utterly humiliated.

The driver leapt out of the vehicle, shouting, “DO YOU REALIZE YOU ALMOST DENTED MY CAR?!”

I managed to stutter, “S-sorry…”

He continued, “Think next time, you idiot!”

Out of nowhere, a voice from behind called out, “Don’t you dare speak to a woman like that. Can I help you?”

Stunned by the unexpected kindness, I turned to see who the voice belonged to. And there he was—Alejandro, my old high school crush.

I had lost everything at 45—my husband was gone, my son was estranged, and I had just been fired. On top of that, I almost got run over by someone more worried about his car’s well-being than my own life.

Yet, as if by some miracle, Alejandro stood up for me. He took me in, offered me a warm meal, and gave me a chance to start afresh. Through sheer fortune, I found a part-time job at a small art gallery. This new opportunity became a turning point; it helped me reconnect with my son and provided the strength to rebuild my life. Life didn’t become magically easy, but with Alejandro’s support and my newfound purpose at the gallery, I rediscovered hope.
