In a heart-wrenching account, an Irish woman named Gráinne Kealy is sharing her devastating experience in hopes of preventing similar tragedies. Back in 2006, a typical day took a turn for the worse when she was involved in a car accident that resulted in the loss of her entire forehead.

At just 22 years old, Kealy had been riding in her boyfriend’s jeep with her feet comfortably placed on the dashboard—a casual position that many find themselves in during road trips. However, this seemingly harmless position became dangerous when the vehicle hit a patch of black ice. The airbags deployed swiftly, pushing her knees into her face at an incredible speed and causing catastrophic injuries.

Recounting that fateful moment, Kealy shared, “I thought I would be more comfortable with my feet on the dashboard. But when the airbags inflated, they catapulted my knees right into my face at 200 mph.” As a result, she suffered from a minor brain injury, severe facial injuries, a cerebrospinal fluid leak, and lost two teeth. The severity of her injuries forced doctors to remove her forehead entirely.
Thankfully, her boyfriend escaped with only minor injuries, but for Kealy, the road to recovery was long and grueling. She describes her healing process as not only physically painful but emotionally taxing, as she struggled with the psychological impact of her changed appearance.

“Learning to cope with the physical and emotional pain was a challenge,” Kealy admitted. “Seeing my reflection was tough, but it was even harder dealing with others’ reactions. Living without a forehead for two years felt surreal and isolating.” Finally, in 2009, she underwent surgery to receive a ceramic forehead, bringing a semblance of normalcy back to her life.
Kealy is now on a mission to educate others about the dangers of resting feet on the dashboard while driving. To drive her point home, she shares photos of her injuries, stressing the importance of avoiding this dangerous practice.

“It worries me to see people still putting their feet up like I did,” she says, “especially on social media, in movies, or TV shows.” With celebrities often seen in this risky pose, Kealy emphasizes the widespread platform they have, potentially setting a perilous example for their millions of followers.
The overwhelming public response to her poignant message keeps her motivated. “I receive messages from around the world thanking me for sharing my story. It’s encouraging to see it making a difference,” she declares.

Despite some negative feedback, Kealy focuses on the positive impact she can make. “The online response has been enlightening. Sure, there are negative comments, but there’s a lot of support too. Seeing people warn each other to avoid this mistake gives me hope that my warning is heard,” she concludes.
