While horror enthusiasts have myriad options on their screens, it’s rare to find a series that gets the adrenaline rushing quite like this one. This gripping show has fans talking and sharing their reactions all over social media.

One viewer exclaimed, “They got me every time lol,” while another confessed, “The first scare got me. The Shining vibes…” One particularly startled fan wrote, “The way my heart was BEATING after this,” while someone else praised it as “A perfect example of a horror done right.”

The masterminds behind this thrill-inducing series, Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong, have crafted a tale that centers around eight young adults, reportedly terminally ill, who spend their nights weaving chilling tales as part of their spooky club activities. This series draws inspiration from Christopher Pike’s 1994 novel and several of his other short stories.

The impressive cast includes talents such as Iman Benson, Igby Rigney, Ruth Codd, Aya Furukawa, Annarah Shephard, William Chris Sumpter, and Sauriyan Sapkota, bringing the eerie storyline to life.

A Record Set and a Genre Explored Differently

The premiere episode, aptly titled ‘The Final Chapter,’ dazzles and startles with its 21 jump scares, resulting from Flanagan’s unique approach to the horror genre. Under pressure from executives to ramp up the suspense, Flanagan decided to go all out, as he shared in an interview.

He explained, “I thought, ‘We’re going to do all of them at once, and if done right, a jump scare will be rendered meaningless for the rest of the series.’” However, his attempt to diminish the effect backfired slightly, as it seems to have encouraged even more scare-laden scenes.

Through his comments to Deadline, Flanagan made it clear that he’s not a fan of jump scares himself. “I wanted to make sure it was pinned to me, too, as much as it is to the show, to Netflix, and all of us who have inflicted this on everyone,” he said, with his tongue firmly in cheek.

It’s a bittersweet accomplishment for Flanagan, who joked about now having his name in the Guinness Book of World Records for jump scares, which he plans to leverage in future negotiations.

A Season of Intrigue Yet Curtailment

Despite receiving a warm reception from horror aficionados and earning a respectable 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Midnight Club faced an early termination, ending after its inaugural season. Not originally a miniseries, the show was anticipated to continue into a second season before plans shifted when Flanagan signed with Amazon Studios.

Fans were dismayed to hear about the cancellation, as Flanagan himself expressed on Tumblr, divulging some insights into what the second season might have entailed.

“My biggest disappointment is that we left so many story threads open, holding them back for the hypothetical second season, which is always a gamble,” he mused.

For those interested in delving into the spectral adventures of The Midnight Club, it’s available for streaming on Netflix. And if you’re keen to get a taste beforehand, the trailer promises an exhilarating peek at what’s in store!
