Loren Schauers faced an unimaginable ordeal when, at just 18 years old, he was involved in a devastating forklift accident that would forever alter his life. In September 2019, while working as a laborer, Loren experienced a moment that changed everything.

The young man was operating a forklift over a bridge in the United States when a terrifying mishap sent him plummeting 50 feet to the ground. Incredibly, Loren survived the fall itself; however, the vehicle, weighing four tons, landed on top of him, trapping him and causing severe injuries. Throughout this harrowing experience, Loren remained fully conscious.

Faced with insurmountable odds, Loren had to make a profound decision to save his life. His pelvis was completely crushed, leading him to choose a hemicorporectomy—an extensive surgery where everything below his waist was amputated. Reflecting on the choice, Loren shared, “It wasn’t a hard choice to have half of my body amputated—it was basically a choice of living or dying.”

Now, years after the accident, Loren courageously continues to tell his story and has shared images from that unforgettable day. These photos reveal the forklift overturned on a steep hillside, with Loren trapped beneath. He pointed out on Instagram, “If you look closely in the second photo, you can see me still pinned under the forklift. The last photo shows exactly what type it was, I’m sure of.”

During this traumatic time, Loren’s girlfriend, Sabia Reiche, had a daunting experience herself. Doctors repeatedly told her that Loren was unlikely to survive, compelling her to say her farewells on six different occasions as he clung to life. Against all odds, Loren emerged triumphant from his battle, but his recovery journey has been an arduous one.

Looking back on that traumatic day, Loren remarked, “I was conscious throughout everything, so I actually watched as the forklift fell on top of me and crushed my body. Every medical professional I come across is pretty amazed by everything, especially with the story that comes along with my injuries.”
