Kathy Bates turned heads at the Golden Globes, as she joined numerous other actors to celebrate and grace the red carpet. What caught everyone’s attention, beyond her charming presence, was a delightful surprise she unveiled.
Her attendance was on account of her role in “Matlock,” where she earned a nomination for best performance by a female actor in a television series drama. A compelling reason for her presence indeed!
Making her entrance on the red carpet, Kathy stunned the crowd. She wore a stunning beaded dinner jacket paired with sleek black tuxedo trousers. However, what truly stood out was her impressive weight loss of 100 pounds.
In early 2024, Kathy Bates opened up about her weight loss journey, a path she embarked on a few years prior. Her decision to shed about 100 pounds came after receiving a diagnosis of type II diabetes in 2017.
She shared: “Diabetes runs in my family, and I witnessed the struggles my father endured, including a leg amputation. One of my sisters is also battling it very seriously. It scared me straight, prompting me to take charge and think, ‘I’ve got to do something.’”
“Being diagnosed with diabetes doesn’t necessitate giving up your favorite foods. However, being mindful of your overall eating habits is incredibly beneficial.”
In a candid interview, Kathy further revealed her focus on health over the recent years, nearly reaching her college weight. She elaborated: “It felt like serendipity that my health improved just as the show came along. I’m in good shape now. I can walk and breathe effortlessly, unlike before when I’d need to sit down every couple of minutes on different shows.”
She added, “A woman my age usually doesn’t get opportunities like this role, especially with its complexity and exceptional writing. I pinch myself daily with disbelief.”
“Throughout my career, my sole aim has been to deliver the best work possible. I’m fortunate to have learned so much from my varied roles, preparing me for this moment. I’m grateful I stayed in the game for it.”
Even though the award eventually went to Anna Sawai for her portrayal in “Shogun,” Kathy undoubtedly left a memorable mark. She had humorously prepared an acceptance speech and tore it up playfully when she didn’t win.
