Colleen and Ray were thrilled to welcome a young boy into their home, but the very next day, they discovered him caring for a baby in his room.
This unexpected turn of events brought about numerous revelations that would forever alter their lives.
Ray raised an eyebrow as he saw Colleen preparing mac and cheese from a box.
“You’re making boxed mac and cheese?”
“It’s for Ben. He’s been so quiet since he came here,” Colleen explained, mixing the cheese into the pasta.
“I thought he might enjoy a comforting meal,” she added.
Ray gently rubbed her shoulders. “He’s just getting used to the new environment. Let’s be patient,” he suggested. “This might help him feel at home.”
They called out for Ben to join them for dinner.
The six-year-old quickly devoured his meal and immediately wanted to return to his room.
Worried, Colleen and Ray decided to check on him. To their astonishment, they found Ben feeding a baby in his room.
“Ben, whose baby is this?” Colleen inquired, her voice filled with concern.
Ben looked anxious. “She’s my sister,” he replied.
“Your sister?” Colleen repeated, puzzled.
“Well, not really. She was the new foster child in my old home. I couldn’t leave her behind,” Ben explained.
Colleen immediately thought of contacting Mrs. Campbell, the foster coordinator, but Ben pleaded otherwise.
“No! You can’t let her take the baby back. Mr. and Mrs. Franklin, my previous foster parents, they’re bad people!” Ben exclaimed.
“What do you mean by that?” Colleen asked, holding the baby gently.
“They’re dangerous. She’ll be in harm’s way,” Ben replied, his eyes filled with terror.
A concerned glance was exchanged between Colleen and Ray. Ben confided in them that Mr. Franklin had physically hurt him.
Ray comforted Ben, saying, “You don’t need to be scared, we’ll figure this out together.”
Ben finally dozed off in Ray’s arms, while Colleen cradled the baby securely.
Wrapped in a blanket, Ben slept peacefully as Colleen and Ray quietly exited the room with the baby.
“What’s our plan here?” Colleen whispered, worried about the legality of the situation. “We can’t keep the baby or we might face serious consequences.”
“I’m not sure,” Ray confessed. “But I do believe Ben is telling the truth.”
“WHERE IS SHE?!” Ben suddenly screamed as he woke up.
“She’s right here, Ben,” Colleen assured him as he ran to her side.
“Ben, we need to know what really happened with the Franklins,” Ray asked gently.
“They hit me… with a belt. And they recorded it,” Ben confessed with a shudder.
Colleen’s eyes widened with shock. Ray inquired if Ben had ever mentioned this to Mrs. Campbell.
“No, but she has to know. She keeps sending kids to them,” Ben replied.
Contemplating their next move, Ray made a decision. “We can’t let her go back,” he declared.
Colleen agreed. “We’ll need to address this situation with someone we trust in Mrs. Campbell’s department,” she said, guiding Ben back to bed.
Later that night, Ray contacted Alana, a trusted worker at DCFS. “Sorry for the late call, Alana, but we have an urgent problem…” he explained.
Once at the Ferguson home, Alana listened carefully to Ben’s account. “Do you think Ben is fabricating any of this?” Ray queried.
“I don’t believe so,” Alana responded. “Children often hide the truth when in abusive situations, and this suggests he trusts you both.”
Alana admitted she had suspected something was wrong with the Franklins.
“Many children are moved out of their care frequently,” she noted.
“What should happen with the baby?” Colleen asked.
“I’ll authorize you to care for her temporarily as foster parents,” Alana decided. “I must do this quietly. Please inform me if Mrs. Campbell contacts you.”
Colleen and Ray agreed to protect the secrecy of the situation, prioritizing the safety of both Ben and the baby.
The next few days were uneventful until Colleen received a call from Mrs. Campbell, causing her heart to race. To keep Ben away from overhearing, she stepped outside to answer.
“Hello?” she greeted hesitantly.
“Mrs. Ferguson, how are you?” Mrs. Campbell politely asked.
“Things are going well, Ben is adjusting nicely,” Colleen replied nervously, wishing for the call to end soon.
“I’m reaching out regarding something else,” Mrs. Campbell mentioned.
“Has Ben mentioned anything unusual about his foster parents?”
“No, he hasn’t spoken of his past,” Colleen deflected, attempting to change the subject. “Maybe some therapy would be beneficial.”
“I don’t feel that’s necessary right now,” Mrs. Campbell replied, sounded on edge. “But if Ben mentions something strange, do inform me.”
“Is there something specific about the Franklins you want to share?”
Colleen probed, regretting the question immediately.
“No, nothing at all. I must dash,” Mrs. Campbell said abruptly, cutting the conversation short.
In that moment, Ben ran out with urgency. “Mom, the baby’s acting up!”
A wave of warmth enveloped Colleen as Ben called her ‘Mom,’ but quickly faded as she worried Mrs. Campbell might have overheard.
Mrs. Campbell called repeatedly afterwards, but Colleen ignored her calls.
“I might have overplayed my hand, but she seemed to be concealing something,” Colleen admitted to Ray later that night.
“You shouldn’t have engaged her,” Ray sighed. “We had leverage against those abusers.”
“I understand, but I did inform Alana. She reassured me not to worry since the truth would surface eventually,” Colleen said.
“Did she provide the baby’s name?” Ray inquired.
“Not yet. She’s still ‘baby girl’ to us,” Colleen replied.
“I’ll stay home tomorrow just across any potential issues,” Ray offered. “We need to remain discreet with her presence.”
The following day, as Ray prepared to pick Ben up from school, a truck careened down their street and slowed in front of the house, its driver glaring at Ray before speeding off.
“HEY!” Ray shouted, frustrated.
He couldn’t recognize the driver, but feared who it might have been. After a brief chase, he lost sight of the vehicle.
The growing concern for their family’s safety weighed heavily on him as he returned home.
“Alana, this can’t continue. I’m sure it was Mr. Franklin,” Ray urgently explained when she arrived.
“You aren’t certain it was him,” Alana cautioned. “I am close to getting solid evidence so we can involve law enforcement properly.”
“We can’t delay any longer, we’re at risk,” Ray pressed.
Colleen proposed a temporary relocation to her mother’s for safety. Alana supported the idea until evidence was secured, adding, “I have found someone who was in their care years ago, waiting for a callback.”
Suddenly, frantic knocks disturbed them. Mrs. Campbell and a couple were outside.
“They’re here,” Ray muttered ominously as he moved to answer the door.
“I’m dialing the police!” Colleen announced, grabbing her phone.
Opening the door, Ray was confronted by Mrs. Campbell and the Franklins.
“You know who I am, Mr. Ferguson! Surrender the baby or I’ll take your son!” Mrs. Campbell threatened.
Ray stood his ground. “You wouldn’t dare, Cynthia. Not with the information we have!”
Alana intervened assertively, warning, “Cynthia, leave now or face legal repercussions!”
Mrs. Franklin angrily declared, “We’re taking the baby!”
“That would be illegal,” Alana called out. “The Fergusons are the girl’s legal foster parents.”
“You overstepped!” Mrs. Campbell accused.
“No, I acted within my rights. An investigation has begun against you,” Alana shot back.
A tense confrontation ensued, with Mr. Franklin lunging toward Alana, only to be stopped by Ray.
In the chaos, Colleen picked up her phone, only for Mrs. Franklin to slap it away.
“YOU WON’T CALL ANYONE! Surrender the baby now!” Mrs. Franklin demanded, her intent dark and unsettling.
The image of a heartless woman who inflicted harm on children and recorded it stirred an unexpected courage in Colleen. For the first time, fury propelled her actions, landing a punch on Mrs. Franklin.
Mrs. Campbell and Alana also became embroiled in a skirmish as Ben watched from within his room.
“BEN, LOCK YOUR DOOR!” Colleen yelled, hastening their resolve.
Following his mother’s command, Ben secured his room.
Ray succeeded in forcing Mr. Franklin outside, ushering Mrs. Franklin and Mrs. Campbell out swiftly after.
“I’ll report you for assault!” Mrs. Campbell shouted.
“And we for trespassing!” Colleen retaliated.
“The police already know! I made the call!” cried a new voice, startling everyone. It was Sarah and Andrew, the Fergusons’ neighbors.
“Thank you, Andrew,” Ray gasped, breathless from exertion.
Mrs. Campbell smirked. “Great! This works in my favor. I am familiar with almost all the officers, and it’s you who’ll end up in cuffs!” she threatened.
The police arrived promptly, with Officer Carson acknowledging Mrs. Campbell’s presence.
“Wait,” Alana interjected, identifying herself. “I’m a social worker and placed the baby under the Fergusons’ guardianship after Ben confided disturbing activities in his former home.”
“LIES!” Mrs. Franklin shouted.
Ray added his voice, detailing Ben’s maltreatment at the Franklins’ home. “He retrieved the baby out of concern, albeit in error, but with pure motives.”
Alana emerged with documentation to back her claims. “Officers, please verify these records,” she stated, handing over the documentation for scrutiny.
“Papers don’t exempt them from baby-snatching or assault,” Mr. Franklin protested, pointing to his injured facial area.
“Those documents hold little weight,” Mrs. Campbell dismissed, casting doubt on the ongoing police review. “Their actions contravene state law—abduction and aggression.”
Colleen was livid. “I can’t believe you are still trying to manipulate the situation,” she uttered with disbelief.
Suddenly, Ben burst forth with the baby, startling everyone.
“I took her! I’m to blame, but you won’t send another child back there!”
“Return the baby to Mrs. Campbell, now!” Officer Carson directed.
“NEVER!” Ben shouted defiantly. “Mrs. Franklin recorded while Mr. Franklin beat me!
Other grim acts occurred,” he alleged, gesturing demonstratively. A collective gasp filled the air.
Shock enveloped everyone.
“That’s not true,” Mrs. Campbell whispered, trying to deflect.
“Do you believe this is fabricated?” Officer Tristan addressed Alan.
“I do not,” Alana asserted firmly, dismissing Mrs. Campbell’s defense. “The children’s placement has anomalies, for sure.”
“Those are groundless allegations, and I will sue!” Mr. Franklin blustered.
“Don’t you dare threaten anyone here, you pervert,” Ray intervened. “The hideous deeds you and these vile people committed warrant severe punishment. Officers, there must be evidence at their residence.”
“We note your address here. We’ll proceed right away.” Officer Tristan progressed towards his car, but Mr. Franklin’s stance turned hostile.
“NO!” Mr. Franklin yelled and charged Officer Tristan, rendering him momentarily vulnerable.
His colleagues rushed amidst this development.
Officer Tristan stood resolute. “Assaulting an officer seals your fate, Mr. Franklin. You are now under arrest.”
Officer Carson decided to involve Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Franklin in further investigations. “Innocence should bring you no fear,” he announced, indicating impending scrutiny.
Once the tumult passed, Ben broke down, comforted deeply by Colleen and Ray. “Your bravery will save others,” Colleen praised, keeping Ben embraced with Grace closely.
The next morning, a call from Alana brought news of a breakthrough. “Colin, a past victim, has confessed about the Franklins. Officers are currently investigating their residence. Mr. Franklin stays detained; Cynthia fled, a red flag for her implication.”
“What’s the baby’s name?” Colleen suddenly queried.
“Grace,” Alana confirmed. “I can support her adoption process if you choose.”
Ray and Colleen exchanged smiles and nodded in instant agreement.
The investigation unveiled damning evidence, convicting the Franklins and Mrs. Campbell with severe charges.
Meanwhile, Colleen, Ray, Ben, and Grace embarked on a new chapter together.
