Amy Schumer Shares How Online ‘Moon Face’ Remarks Triggered a Health Discovery

Amy Schumer recently opened up about how unkind remarks regarding her ‘moon face’ online led her to uncover a surprising health condition. In a heartfelt conversation on the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper, the comedian explained how social media backlash regarding her facial swelling prompted her to investigate further.

Recalling the moment her changed appearance became the talk of the internet, Schumer said, “A year ago, the internet really came for me.” Initially, Schumer dismissed these negative comments, attributing them to the usual online trolling. However, as medical professionals began commenting on her appearance, advising she seek medical counsel, Schumer decided it was time to pay attention.

These professionals speculated that Schumer might be suffering from Cushing syndrome, a condition caused by prolonged exposure to high levels of cortisol, according to the Mayo Clinic. The symptoms include a rounded face, a noticeable hump between the shoulders, and significant stretch marks.

At first, Schumer was inclined to shrug off these comments, responding with a defiant “F*** off,” but as she connected the dots, she realized there might be truth to them. She had been receiving steroid injections to treat scars from her breast reduction and cesarean delivery when her son Gene was born in 2019. These treatments were likely the root of the symptoms she was experiencing.

Schumer confessed, “I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard.” In early 2024, it’s confirmed by her doctors that she indeed had Cushing syndrome. This diagnosis came at a time when Schumer was gearing up to start filming her comedy “Kinda Pregnant.”

Feeling self-conscious about being on camera while dealing with Cushing syndrome was a challenge for Schumer, even though those around her reassured her of her appearance. Thankfully, filmmaker Lorraine Caffery played a pivotal role in helping Schumer regain her confidence. Schumer recounted, “She told me, ‘You know, I think you look f***ing great,’” highlighting how supportive words can have a significant impact.

The experience serves as a testament to the potential silver linings of even the harshest criticisms. While hurtful comments often dominate online interactions, they can sometimes prompt positive actions that lead to personal discovery and improvement.
