When I first met Daniel, I quickly realized his generous nature. It’s one of the things I cherished about him. He was the sort to pay for friendsโ meals, tip waiters generously, and step up for anyone in need. It was a trait I admired greatlyโthat is, until it almost came between us last week.
We’ve been happily married for three years, living a relatively peaceful life together. Our relationship didnโt involve major arguments or dramatic conflictsโjust the usual highs and lows of marital life. I believed we were a team. Up until last week, I wouldโve assured you we were completely aligned financially as well.
Then came Daniel’s bonus at work.
It wasnโt an enormous sum of money, but it was a considerable amountโenough to substantially enhance our savings or tackle some long-overdue home repairs. Daniel was elated, and I felt genuinely happy for him. But before we even had a chance to discuss how to best use this bonus, he had already made his decision.
โI think we should take my entire family out for a celebration,โ he announced, his bright eyes glowing with excitement. โItโs been forever since we all got together, and nowโs the perfect occasion.โ
I hesitated to respond. I adore his family, yet a lavish dinner for all of them? His parents, his two siblings along with their spouses, and several nieces and nephewsโit would be quite the gathering. Still, I didnโt want to dampen his enthusiasm.
โAre you sure you want to spend the money in this way?โ I asked, trying to keep my voice even.
โAbsolutely! Itโs a celebration, and I want my family to share in my joy,โ he replied assuredly.
I let the matter rest. Perhaps I was being overly cautious. It was his bonus, after all.
The evening finally came, and it turned out to be grander than I anticipated. Daniel had booked an upscale restaurantโthe type with swan-folded napkins and a wine menu that seemed endless. His family was overjoyed. They ordered appetizers, main courses, desserts, bottles of wineโthe works. It quickly turned into a magnificent feast.
I kept an eye on how the bill was racking up, trying to suppress my growing uneasiness. I convinced myself that Daniel knew what he was doing.
Then, the waiter approached our table with the check.
Daniel smiled, giving a casual wave as he turned to me. โBabe, you’re handling this, right?โ
I was taken aback.
โWhat?โ I murmured, my voice hardly above a whisper.
โYouโre paying,โ he repeated, as though it was perfectly ordinary. โYou manage the bills usually. Just put it on your card; Iโll sort some funds later.โ
I felt my face becoming flushed. His family sat there, oblivious to the shock their beloved Daniel had just given me. I forced a smile and took the bill into my hands.
The amount was staggering. Far beyond what I had expected. Nearly half of our savings.
I looked at Daniel, silently hoping heโd grasp the enormity of what he was asking, but he merely smiled back, easy-going as ever.
I faced a decision. Create a scene and embarrass him in front of his entire family, or suppress my frustration and deal with it later.
I reached for my card, settled the bill, and kept my composure throughout the evening.
As soon as we reached home, I unleashed my pent-up emotions.
โDaniel, are you serious? You used my money for that dinner? Without a word to me?โ
He gave a dismissive shrug. โItโs not just your money. Weโre married. Itโs our money.โ
โBut you didnโt even consult me! You made a major financial decision and assumed Iโd just comply!โ My voice trembled with emotion. โThat was nearly half our savings, Daniel. Did it even cross your mind?โ
โIt was a special occasion,โ he defended himself. โPlus, I just received my bonus! Weโll be alright.โ
โNo, Daniel, it was your bonus,โ I retorted. โBy the way, where is that money? Because it didnโt pay for dinner.โ
I detected a flicker of guilt in his eyes. And it all began to make sense.
I folded my arms, demanding, โDaniel, where exactly is your bonus?โ
He hesitated. Eventually, in a subdued voice, he confessed, โIโฆ I spent it.โ
โOn what, Daniel?โ
He avoided my gaze.
I had to pry the truth out of him. Before he even informed me about the bonus, he had indulged himself with a shopping spree. New golf clubs, fancy headphones, and a pricey watch he had been longing for. By the time he thought of treating his family, the bonus was fully spent.
I was in disbelief. โSo you used my money because you had already blown through yours?โ
โI figured Iโd repay you,โ he mumbled.
What he had done left me not only upsetโbut deeply hurt and disappointed.
That night, I found solace in the guest room.
The following morning, I kept my distance, needing space and time to reflect.
That evening, he came home looking woeful. โI messed up,โ he admitted. โI got swept up in celebrating and didn’t think things through. Worse, I took you for granted. Iโm truly sorry.โ
I said nothing in response.
โIโve transferred the funds back into our account,โ he continued. โReturned the watch, the clubsโeverything. The only item I couldnโt return were the headphones, but Iโve listed them for sale online.โ
That surprised me. Daniel had many qualities, but admitting mistakes wasnโt typically one of them.
For the first time since that fiasco of a dinner, my anger softened. He had made a mistake, yes. But he was taking steps to rectify it. That was significant.
I let out a long breath. โThis canโt happen again, Daniel. Weโre partners. You must discuss big financial choices with me first. Promise?โ
โI promise,โ he assured me, and this time, I believed him.
That night, for the first time in days, I returned to sleep beside him.
