Actor Bill Cobbs had nearly 200 roles in a career spanning five decades. He entered the world of acting after 30 years. He was a car salesman and one day he decided to change his life.
So he moved to New York and tried his luck. After a career in theatre, at the age of 40 he fascinated audiences with his role in the crime thriller The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three.
A native of Cleveland, Cobbs appeared in films such as The Hudsucker Proxy by the Coen brothers, as Whitney Houston’s manager in The Bodyguard or in Martin Scorsese’s 1986 sports drama.
He also starred in The Color of Money, Demolition Man, the coach in Air Bud and the security guard in Night at the Museum. His first appearance on the big screen took place in 1974, in the movie The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. He won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Performance in a Daytime Series for Dino Dana in 2020.
Bill Cobs was one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood and also appeared in TV shows such as The Sopranos , The West Wing, The Equalizer, Six Feet Under, Sesame Street and Good Times.
“All our friends and neighbors went to see the movie, and everyone was waiting for me to show up,” Bill Cobbs recalled in a 2013 interview.

Bill Cobbs died peacefully Tuesday night at his home in Riverside, California. The sad announcement was made by his brother, Thomas G. Cobbs. He wanted to send an emotional message after learning the news. Thomas did not, however, reveal the cause of his brother’s death.
“We are saddened to share the passing of Bill Cobbs. On Tuesday, June 25, Bill passed away peacefully at his home in California. A beloved partner, older brother, uncle, surrogate parent, godfather and friend, Bill recently and happily celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by loved ones. As a family, we are at peace with the thought that Bill has found eternal peace and rest with God. We ask that you pray for us in these times,” was the message Thomas sent.
