Grandma’s Belly Button Care: Vaseline and Baking Soda – A Soft, Soothing Trick

Paul Wilkerson

Have you ever noticed that your belly button sometimes feels a little dry, itchy, or just uncomfortable? Many older folks discover that the tiny crease in the middle of the tummy needs a bit of gentle care, just like the rest of the skin. A very simple, old‑fashioned remedy uses two everyday things you already have in your cupboard: Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and baking soda. Together they make a calming paste that soothes, cleans, and softens the delicate navel area.

Why these two?

  • Vaseline is a protective, moisturising balm. It forms a thin, breathable layer that locks in moisture and shields sensitive skin from irritation.
  • Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) is wonderfully mild; it gently cleanses and can calm occasional itchiness or redness caused by dampness or fabric rubbing.

Grandmas used to say that a happy belly button makes for a happy tummy – and this little routine certainly feels like a moment of self‑care.

How to do it safely and gently

  1. Wash your hands and make sure your belly button is clean and dry. If needed, gently clean it with a cotton swab dipped in warm water, then pat dry.
  2. In a tiny clean dish, mix a pea‑sized amount of Vaseline with just a pinch of baking soda – no more than the tip of a teaspoon. Stir until smooth.
  3. Using a clean finger or a cotton swab, take a very small dab of the mixture and gently smooth it onto the inside of your belly button. There’s no need to push or rub hard – just a light, circular stroke.
  4. Leave it on for 10–15 minutes. You might feel a faint, pleasant warmth; that’s simply the baking soda doing its gentle work.
  5. After the time is up, rinse the area with warm water, pat dry completely, and apply a tiny bit of plain Vaseline if the skin feels thirsty.

A few gentle reminders

  • Only use this paste once or twice a week, not every day.
  • If your belly button is red, weeping, or painful, please see a nurse or doctor rather than using home remedies.
  • Baking soda can be slightly drying if overused; that’s why the Vaseline is there to balance it.

This tiny ritual takes only a few minutes, costs pennies, and can leave you feeling fresh and comfortable. It’s a quiet little kindness that your grandmother might have known – and now it’s yours to enjoy.
