A young girl was swimming in a lake in Georgia when she was attacked by a large, vicious beaver.

The woman was bitten in the leg by the huge beaver while visiting Lake Lanier in the Sardis region on Saturday, according to local radio station WDUN-AM and ABC affiliate WSB-TV.

According to WSB-TV, the event occurred adjacent to private property.

The girl’s father eventually intervened and killed the beaver with blunt force, according to Kevin Buecker, the field supervisor for Hall County Animal Control.

Melissa Cummings of Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources verified that the girl’s father killed the animal after the attack.

The identity and condition of the victim have not been made public.

On Tuesday, the Hall County administration issued a notice on its Facebook page telling the public that the beaver tested positive for rabies.

Hall County’s public information officer Joy Holmes confirmed the positive test results to Access WDUN.

According to McGowan, who talked to WSB-TV, beavers become crazy after the rabies virus reaches their brains.

Beavers are the largest rodents found in the United States, weighing between 35 and 65 lbs, according to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.

According to WSB-TV, DNR Wildlife Resources Supervisor Don McGowan estimated that the beaver involved in the attack in Georgia on Saturday weighed between 50 and 55 pounds.

The Hall County government declared that public notices of the positive test “will be posted in the area where the rabid animal was located.”
