Cloves are one of natureโs most concentrated sources of eugenol, a powerful compound with natural anesthetic and antiseptic properties. Historically used to numb dental pain, eugenol is incredibly effective at “turning off” the pain signals in a raw, inflamed throat while simultaneously inhibiting the growth of bacteria and viruses.
The Science of Cloves

Cloves rank among the highest foods on the ORAC scale (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), meaning they are packed with antioxidants that help the body manage systemic inflammation. When you steep or chew cloves, the essential oils create a protective film over the mucous membranes of the throat, providing a localized “numbing” effect that can offer immediate relief from swallowing difficulties.
Warming Clove and Honey Throat Rinse
This preparation uses a high concentration of whole cloves to create a potent infusion that acts as a liquid shield for the throat.
Ingredients
- 5 to 7 whole cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick (contains cinnamaldehyde for additional antimicrobial support)
- 1 cup filtered water
- 1 tablespoon raw honey
- 1 pinch of sea salt (helps draw out excess fluid from swollen tissues)
Instructions
- Crush the spices: Use the back of a spoon to slightly crack the whole cloves and the cinnamon stick. This allows the essential oils to escape into the water more easily.
- Boil: Place the cloves, cinnamon, and filtered water into a small stainless steel pot. Bring to a boil.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 8 to 10 minutes. The water should turn a deep, spicy amber color.
- Cool: Remove from the heat and let it sit covered for another 5 minutes.
- Add Honey and Salt: Once the liquid is warm but not scalding (around 45ยฐC), stir in the raw honey and the pinch of sea salt. Adding honey to boiling water can destroy its beneficial enzymes.
- Gargle and Sip: Take a small mouthful and gargle deeply for 30 seconds to coat the back of the throat, then swallow slowly.
- Usage: Repeat this every 3 to 4 hours during the peak of the inflammation.
Tips for Sore Throat Relief
- The “Clove Numb”: If the pain is sharp and localized, you can carefully place one whole clove between your cheek and gum near the back of your mouth. Let it soften with your saliva for 10 minutes; it will slowly release eugenol to numb the area.
- Stay Hydrated: Inflammation thrives in dry environments. Sip this clove water warm to keep the throat tissues hydrated and resilient.
Important Note: Clove oil is very potent. If you are using concentrated clove essential oil rather than whole cloves, never apply it undiluted to the throat or skin, as it can cause irritation.
