Fur plays a crucial role in protecting animals from the cold. It not only keeps them warm but also gives them their unique appearance. However, there are some animals that you wouldn’t recognize without their fur. Recently, a remarkable creature was found by a couple in West Arichat, Nova Scotia. At first glance, it appeared to be a hairless cat, but it turned out to be an extremely rare hairless raccoon!

Animal rescued from the cold looks like a hairless cat — you'll never guess what it really is

You may be familiar with raccoons and their distinct mask-like fur pattern, but this particular raccoon, a northern raccoon, is completely bald due to a condition called severe alopecia. Hope Swinimer, the director of Hope for Wildlife, a nonprofit conservation organization, described it as a severe case, with only a few tufts of fur remaining around the snout, ankles, and feet.

Hairless Raccoon

This hairless female raccoon has been affectionately named Rufus after a character from the cartoon Kim Possible. Though the cause of Rufus’s hair loss remains undetermined, the rescue team ruled out parasites, mange, and fungal infections, as her skin appeared to be healthy. They suspect an autoimmune disorder may be responsible for damaging her hair follicles.

Rufus, the Hairless Raccoon

Raccoons rely on their fur to keep warm and protect their skin from the elements, which is why the rescuers were amazed that Rufus managed to survive the winter without fur. Despite her challenging circumstances, she exhibited a “feisty” personality, and her successful survival was truly a testament to her tenacity. The team at Hope for Wildlife expressed their relief that Rufus was found in time, as she was initially in a weakened state upon arrival.

With her unique situation, Rufus may become a permanent resident at the shelter. They have plans to provide her with a specialized habitat, an outdoor space equipped with cozy areas for warmth, such as hammocks and nesting boxes.

We are astounded by the story of Rufus, the hairless raccoon. Her ability to survive in the wild without fur is truly extraordinary, and we are grateful that she has now found the care she needs. Share this remarkable story if you have an appreciation for animals and their remarkable resilience!
