It’s not often that you see a mature guy cry in our society. While women face a number of double standards that men do not, I believe this is the most distressing. I mean, come on, everyone has the right to cry a tear or two without being judged. Even large, muscular talk show hosts need to let it all out every now and then!
To commemorate Steve Harvey’s birthday, the comedian’s team decided it would be wonderful to surprise the much-loved figure with something truly unique.
And, while Steve begins the clip a little tiredly, explaining that he didn’t want any surprises during his public celebration, it’s evident that his colleagues couldn’t stop themselves.
But, let’s be honest, the birthday boy doesn’t appear to be pleased with this sudden pause in his presentation. He proceeds to read the strange lines off the teleprompter unenthusiastically, saying, “Calling in by satellite from Orlando. Let’s find out who it is.”
When Steve sees the word “Orlando,” he pauses for a moment. It’s evident that he’s getting a sense of who this person might be. But as this guest’s face appears on the screen in front of him, the normally cool and controlled talk show presenter bursts into tears.
The man on the television looks directly into the camera and greets Steve warmly. “Hello, this is Rich Liss from Orlando, Florida, and I’m calling to wish you a happy birthday,” the man says.
Steve is so taken aback by the unexpected visitor that he can hardly glance back at the television. “Hey, man,” the host says after a few moments. “I love you, man.”
It’s an embarrassing scene, yet the emotion is so strong that it’s difficult to look away. The camera then pans out to reveal a woman standing by Rich’s side. Steve knows her right away as Becky, Rich’s wife.
So, who is Rich and Becky Liss to this tearful talk show host? As it turns out, the three have a long history together.
Before he became the famous comic that he is today, Steve was working in the carpet cleaning business in Cleveland. When he first tried his hand at being a performer, the Lisses offered him his first contract and even loaned him money.
When Steve sees these two for the first time in years, he naturally wants to treat them the best manner he knows how, and boy is it special!
