Traditional folk practices have long utilized the aromatic potency of cloves combined with the cooling properties of vinegar to help manage body temperature. Cloves are rich in eugenol, a powerful compound known for its ability to support the body’s natural response to heat and inflammation.
When infused into vinegarโa natural “refrigerant” that evaporates quickly from the skinโthe mixture helps to draw excess heat away from the body’s surface, providing a gentle cooling effect during a fever.

Benefits of the Clove and Vinegar Compress
- Evaporative Cooling: As the acetic acid in the vinegar evaporates, it pulls heat from the skin, helping to lower the surface temperature.
- Aromatic Comfort: The scent of eugenol from the cloves has a calming effect on the nervous system, which can be helpful during the restlessness of a fever.
- Surface Cleansing: Vinegar acts as a mild antimicrobial agent, keeping the skin fresh and clear while the body works through its natural recovery process.
Warming Spice Cooling Wash
This preparation is used as a topical compress for the forehead, pulse points, and the soles of the feet.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon whole organic cloves (slightly crushed)
- 1/2 cup raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
- 2 cups cool filtered water
- 1 small soft cotton cloth or flannel
Instructions
- Infuse: Place the crushed cloves in a small glass jar and pour the apple cider vinegar over them. Let this sit for at least 30 minutes (or up to 24 hours for a stronger infusion).
- Dilute: Pour the clove-infused vinegar into a bowl of cool water. The water should be cool to the touch, but never ice-cold, to avoid shocking the body.
- Soak: Submerge your cotton cloth in the liquid and wring it out until it is damp but not dripping.
- Apply: Place the cloth on the forehead, the back of the neck, or wrap it around the wrists where the blood vessels are closest to the surface.
- Focus on Feet: In many traditional cultures, soaking socks in this mixture and wearing them (covered by dry wool socks) is believed to help “pull” the fever down through the feet.
- Refresh: As the cloth becomes warm from the body’s heat, dip it back into the cool liquid and re-apply every 10 to 15 minutes.
- Rest: Keep the room dim and ensure the person is hydrated with warm herbal teas while using these compresses.
