The combination of cloves and garlic is a staple in traditional topical applications for foot and joint discomfort. This “running like a teenager” sensation is often attributed to the powerful analgesic and circulatory-stimulating properties of these two ingredients when applied directly to the skin.
The Synergy of Cloves and Garlic

When infused into a carrier oil or applied as a compress, these ingredients target pain through several distinct pathways:
- Natural Anesthesia: Cloves contain a high concentration of eugenol, a natural anesthetic. When applied topically, it can help desensitize nerve endings in the feet, providing a numbing effect that dulls sharp or chronic pain.
- Vasodilation: Garlic is a potent vasodilator. Its sulfur compounds help increase blood flow to the area of application. Improved circulation can speed up the removal of metabolic waste from joints and bring fresh oxygen to tired muscles.
- Anti-Inflammatory Action: Both ingredients are rich in antioxidants that help reduce localized swelling (edema) in the ankles and soles, which is a common cause of morning stiffness and “heavy” feet.
Warming Clove and Garlic Foot Rub
This oil-based treatment is designed to be massaged into the soles of the feet and the joints of the toes to relieve stiffness and improve mobility.
Clove and Garlic Mobility Oil
- 3 cloves Fresh garlic, crushed
- 10โ12 Whole cloves (or 1/2 tsp ground cloves)
- 1/4 cup Olive oil or sesame oil (sesame is traditionally preferred for its warming nature)
- Crush the garlic cloves and let them sit for 10 minutes to activate the beneficial sulfur compounds.
- In a small pan, combine the oil, the crushed garlic, and the whole cloves.
- Warm the mixture over very low heat for 5โ7 minutes. Do not let it boil. You only want to infuse the oil with the volatile essences of the spices.
- Remove from the heat and let the oil cool until it is comfortably warm to the touch.
- Strain the oil into a glass jar.
- Massage the warm oil into your feet for 10 minutes, focusing on the arches, heels, and any painful joints. For best results, put on thick cotton socks and leave the oil on overnight.
The Benefits
The warmth of the oil combined with the eugenol from the cloves provides immediate comfort, while the garlic compounds work to stimulate circulation. Regular application, especially before bed, can help reduce the “first-step” pain many people experience when getting out of bed in the morning.
