Are your entry rugs constantly being damaged by your furry friends? You’re not alone! I faced the same problem with my mischievous cat, Lucky. He would wreak havoc on my entry rug, leaving me worried about the condition of the subfloor. Determined to find a solution, I embarked on a project to upgrade my flooring with beautiful and durable hexagon tiles, similar to the ones in my kitchen.

Getting Started

With a plan in mind, I got to work. The first step was to carefully remove the old flooring along the traced line, making way for the new tiles. To ensure long-lasting protection against moisture, I applied waterproofing using Schluter Kerdi membrane and AquaDefense liquid membrane. This crucial step preserves the longevity of the tiles and prevents any potential damage.

Laying the Tiles

Once the preparation was complete, it was time to lay the tiles. I used rapid-setting thin-set mortar to secure the hexagon tiles in place. After the tiles were set, I patiently went through the process of grouting. Grouting can be a bit messy, but it’s an essential part of the project. To clean up any excess grout from the tiles, I found that using baby wipes was quite handy.

Ensuring Flexibility and Integrity

To add flexibility to the flooring, I left exterior gaps between the tiles and other flooring. These gaps were intended for caulking and would allow for any shifts in the flooring without compromising its integrity. The caulking also helped hide any irregular cuts and contributed to a seamless and polished look.

The Final Result

With the edges properly caulked, my project was complete! The new entryway not only solved the cat-related challenges but also transformed the space into a practical and visually appealing area. Now, wet and muddy shoes are no longer a concern, as my new floor is designed to withstand the elements.

This project was born out of necessity and turned my previously ruined floor into a functional and aesthetically pleasing space. So, if you’re facing similar challenges with entry rugs, why not consider upgrading your flooring? With a little bit of effort and some beautiful tiles, you can create a resilient and welcoming entryway for your home. Let’s bid adieu to damaged rugs and say hello to a stylish and pet-friendly entryway!
