Traditional Onion & Clove Relief Tea

Boiling Onions and Cloves together is a traditional, high-potency method for creating a “respiratory tonic.” This combination is frequently used in folk medicine to address heavy chest congestion, persistent coughs, and to help “warm” the body during a chill.

When these two ingredients are boiled, the heat releases sulfur compounds from the onion and eugenol from the cloves, creating a powerful aromatic steam and a concentrated liquid that acts as a natural expectorant.

Why This Combination Works

  • Onion: Acts as a powerful mucolytic, meaning it helps break down and thin out stubborn mucus in the lungs and sinuses.
  • Cloves: Provide significant analgesic (pain-relieving) and antiseptic properties. They help soothe a raw, scratchy throat and may help reduce the activity of harmful bacteria.
  • The Synergy: While onion clears the pathways, the cloves provide a numbing effect that calms the “tickle” in the throat that causes dry coughing.

Traditional Onion & Clove Relief Tea

This preparation is a functional, savory tea designed for utility. It has a deep, spicy aroma that is excellent for clearing the sinuses even before you take your first sip.

Ingredients

  • 1 Medium Yellow or Red Onion (peeled and quartered)
  • 5โ€“7 Whole Cloves
  • 2 cups Water
  • Optional: A squeeze of fresh Lemon (to be added after boiling)

Instructions

  1. Preparation: Peel the onion and cut it into four large chunks. Take the whole cloves and press them into the flesh of the onion piecesโ€”this ensures they stay submerged and release their oils evenly.
  2. The Boil: Place the onion and cloves in a small pot with 2 cups of water. Bring to a rolling boil.
  3. The Simmer: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. The water should turn a pale yellow or amber color.
  4. The Steam (Optional): Before straining, you can carefully remove the lid and inhale the steam for 1โ€“2 minutes to help open your nasal passages.
  5. Strain: Pour the liquid through a sieve into a mug, discarding the boiled onion and cloves.
  6. Serve: Drink this tea warm. It is most effective when sipped slowly.

A Thoughtful Resourceful Tip

If the flavor is too pungent for you, you can use the liquid as a gargle instead of a tea. The antiseptic properties of the cloves and onions are highly effective at cleaning the back of the throat when used as a warm rinse.

Frequency

For a persistent cough, this tonic can be taken 2 to 3 times a day. Because it is a natural food-based remedy, it is gentle on the stomach, though it is always best to drink it after a light snack.

Storage: This tea is best consumed immediately while warm. If you make a larger batch, store it in a glass jar in the fridge for no more than 24 hours and reheat it gently on the stove.
