Traditional Nettle Leaf Scalp Rinse

Nettle infusions have a long history in traditional hair care, valued for their mineral-rich profile and ability to support scalp health. For those with grey or thinning hair, stinging nettles are particularly prized because they are packed with silica and sulfur, which help to strengthen the hair shaft and promote a natural, healthy sheen.

While a nettle rinse won’t dramatically change your hair color like a chemical dye, regular use can help to subtly darken grey strands over time, making them appear more blended with your natural hair color.

Benefits of Nettle for Hair

  • Mineral Enrichment: High levels of iron and magnesium support the hair follicles, which is essential for maintaining hair vitality.
  • Scalp Stimulation: Nettle is known to improve circulation to the scalp, which may help in the management of hair thinning.
  • Oil Regulation: Its natural astringent properties help balance sebum production, leaving the hair feeling light and clean.

Traditional Nettle Leaf Scalp Rinse

This simple botanical infusion is best used as a final rinse after your regular washing routine to allow the nutrients to soak into the scalp and hair.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried stinging nettle leaves (or two large handfuls of fresh leaves)
  • 2 cups distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional, to help seal the hair cuticle)
  • 3 drops rosemary essential oil (optional, for added scalp stimulation)

Instructions

  1. Boil: Bring the distilled water to a rolling boil in a non-reactive pot.
  2. Infuse: Remove the water from the heat and add the dried or fresh nettle leaves. Cover the pot with a lid to keep the beneficial volatile oils from escaping.
  3. Steep: Allow the mixture to steep for at least 30 to 45 minutes. For a more concentrated infusion that offers better darkening potential for greys, you can let it sit for up to 4 hours.
  4. Strain: Use a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove the leaves, pouring the liquid into a clean glass jar or spray bottle.
  5. Enhance: Once the liquid has cooled completely, stir in the apple cider vinegar and rosemary oil if you are using them.
  6. Apply: After shampooing and conditioning, pour the nettle infusion over your hair, massaging it gently into the scalp. Do not rinse it out; simply towel-dry your hair as usual.
