Banana Peels: These are exceptionally high in potassium, which supports strong root development, flowering, and overall plant immunity.
Potato Peels: These provide a boost of magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin C, helping with chlorophyll production and healthy foliage.
Eggshells: Composed primarily of calcium carbonate, they strengthen plant cell walls and prevent issues like blossom end rot in tomatoes and peppers.
Traditional “Garden Gold” Liquid Fertilizer
Ingredients:
2-3 Banana peels.
1 cup of Potato peels.
4-5 Crushed, clean eggshells.
1 quart of filtered water.
A large glass jar with a lid.
Instructions:
Prepare the Shells: Wash your eggshells thoroughly and let them dry. Once dry, crush them into small pieces to help the calcium release more easily into the water.
Combine: Place the banana peels, potato peels, and crushed eggshells into your glass jar.
Add Water: Fill the jar with water until the scraps are completely submerged.
Steep: Seal the jar and place it in a cool, dark place. Let it sit for 3 to 5 days. The water will turn dark as the nutrients leach out.
Strain: Pour the liquid through a strainer into a watering can, discarding the solids (you can put the leftover scraps in a compost bin).
Apply: Use this “tea” to water your plants once every two weeks during the growing season.
Helpful Tips for Success
Avoid Odors: If you find the mixture smells, you can keep the jar in the refrigerator while it steeps.
Chop Small: Cutting the peels into small pieces before putting them in the jar will increase the surface area and speed up the nutrient extraction.
Cleanliness: Ensure the eggshells are free of any egg residue to prevent attracting unwanted pests or bacteria.
