The practice of using rice water for hair and skin is a storied tradition, most famously rooted in the Yao women of Huangluo village in China. Known for their floor-length, jet-black hair that rarely grays, these women have used fermented rice water as their primary cleanser for centuries.
This “miracle” water is essentially the starchy liquid left over after soaking or boiling rice. It is packed with Inositol, a carbohydrate that can penetrate damaged hair and repair it from the inside outโeven staying inside the hair shaft after rinsing to provide ongoing protection.+1

The Chemistry of Rice Water
When you use rice water consistently for three months, several biological shifts occur:
- Amino Acid Replenishment: Rice contains 16% protein; the water captures the amino acids that are the building blocks of hair, helping to fill in “gaps” in the hair cuticle.
- pH Balancing (Fermented): Plain rice water is alkaline, but fermenting it lowers the pH to match the natural acidity of the scalp, closing the cuticles for intense shine.
- Pitera Production: Fermentation produces Pitera, a yeast-derived substance rich in vitamins and minerals that promotes cell regeneration.
Traditional Fermented Rice Water Rinse
This preparation is the gold standard for strengthening hair and clearing the complexion.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup of organic white or jasmine rice (unprocessed is best)
- 2 cups of filtered water
- Peel of 1 grapefruit or pomelo (traditional for scent and vitamin C)
- 5 drops of rosemary essential oil (to stimulate the scalp)
Instructions
- Rinse: Thoroughly wash the raw rice once to remove any dust or impurities, then drain.
- Soak: Place the clean rice in a glass bowl with 2 cups of filtered water. Let it sit for 30 to 60 minutes, swirling it occasionally until the water becomes cloudy.
- Strain: Strain the rice water into a clean glass jar. You can cook the rice separately so nothing goes waste.
- Ferment: Add the citrus peels to the jar. Cover it loosely and leave it at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours (less if you live in a warm climate). It should develop a slightly sour, fermented smell.
- Boil & Cool: Boil the fermented water for 5 minutes to stop the fermentation process, then let it cool completely.
- Enhance: Stir in the rosemary essential oil.
- Application: After shampooing, pour the rice water over your hair and massage it into the scalp. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.
Benefits
- Increased Elasticity: The Inositol helps hair stretch without breaking, which is why many see significant length retention after 90 days.
- Intense Shine: By smoothing the cuticle, rice water allows light to reflect off the hair shaft more effectively.
- Scalp Health: The fermented nutrients help soothe irritation and provide a healthy environment for follicle growth.
Note: Because rice water is a protein-rich treatment, using it too often can lead to “protein overload,” making hair feel stiff. For most hair types, using this rinse once a week is the perfect balance.
