Traditional Clove Comfort Salve

Combining the warming properties of cloves with the protective barrier of Vaseline creates a simple, traditional salve often used for soothing minor discomforts.

In many folk wellness practices, cloves are prized for eugenol, a natural compound with mild anesthetic and antiseptic qualities. When infused into a base like Vaseline, it can be applied topically to provide a warming sensation to tired joints or to soften particularly rough, dry skin on the heels and elbows.

Benefits of Clove-Infused Salve

  • Soothing Warmth: The natural spice of the cloves helps stimulate local circulation, which can feel deeply comforting on “creaky” areas.
  • Moisture Lock: Vaseline acts as an occlusive, sealing the beneficial aromatic properties of the clove against the skin.
  • Skin Protection: This mixture is particularly effective for protecting skin against harsh weather or soothing cracked skin.

Traditional Clove Comfort Salve

This preparation allows the cloves to gently infuse into the base, creating a smooth, aromatic balm.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves (lightly crushed to release oils)
  • 3 tablespoons Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly)
  • Optional: A small heat-safe glass jar for storage

Instructions:

  1. Place the Vaseline in a small heat-safe bowl or glass jar.
  2. Set the bowl over a pot of simmering water (a double boiler) until the Vaseline becomes a liquid.
  3. Add the crushed cloves to the melted liquid and stir gently.
  4. Keep the mixture over low heat for about 15 to 20 minutes to allow the clove oils to infuse. Do not let it boil.
  5. Carefully strain out the clove pieces using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth while the mixture is still liquid.
  6. Pour the infused liquid into your storage jar and let it sit undisturbed until it cools and returns to a solid state.

Note: Always perform a small patch test on your skin first to ensure you don’t have a sensitivity to clove oil, as it can be quite potent.
