The Healing Power of the Avocado Seed

It is a common sight to see the large, heavy seed of an avocado tossed aside, yet in traditional wellness, the seed is considered the “heart” of the fruit’s medicinal power. The avocado seed contains over 70% of the antioxidants found in the entire fruit, specifically polyphenols and procyanidins that are highly effective at reducing systemic inflammation.

Our grandmothers knew that when ground or infused, the seed acts as a natural analgesic, helping to soothe the “fire” in the joints and improve mobility by nourishing the connective tissues.

The Healing Power of the Avocado Seed

The seed is a concentrated source of compounds that target the root causes of joint discomfort:

  • Anti-Inflammatory Flavonols: These help inhibit the enzymes responsible for cartilage breakdown and joint swelling.
  • Collagen Support: The seed contains oils that stimulate the production of collagen, which is essential for maintaining the “cushion” between your bones.
  • Improved Circulation: When used topically or internally, the seed helps move stagnant fluids away from swollen joints, reducing pressure and pain.

Traditional Avocado Seed and Honey Joint Tonic

This preparation allows you to access the deep-seated nutrients within the seed, balanced by the enzyme-rich nature of raw honey.

Ingredients

  • 1 organic avocado seed (thoroughly washed and dried)
  • 2 cups of filtered water
  • 1 tablespoon of raw honey
  • 1 small cinnamon stick (to further boost circulation)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Seed: Remove the thin brown outer skin from the avocado seed. Use a sharp knife to carefully grate the pit into small shavings, or chop it into small pieces and pulse in a high-speed blender until it reaches a “meal” consistency.
  2. The Decoction: Place the grated seed and the cinnamon stick into a saucepan with 2 cups of filtered water.
  3. The Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for 10 to 12 minutes. You will see the water turn a distinct reddish-amber color.
  4. Steep: Turn off the heat, cover the pot, and let the infusion sit for 5 minutes.
  5. Strain: Strain the liquid into a glass jar or mug, discarding the seed remains.
  6. The Honey Activation: Wait until the tea has cooled to a warm, drinkable temperature (about 40ยฐC). Stir in the raw honey until dissolved.
  7. Usage: Drink one small cup of this warm tonic in the morning and one in the evening for 7 days.

Benefits

  • Eased Stiffness: The warm infusion helps relax the muscles surrounding the joints, making morning movement easier.
  • Joint Lubrication: The phytochemicals in the seed support the health of the synovial fluid, reducing the “grinding” sensation in knees and hips.
  • Enhanced Immunity: The high antioxidant load helps the body manage the oxidative stress that often accompanies chronic inflammation.

The External “Comfort” Rub

For immediate relief, you can also soak the grated avocado seed in a small amount of rubbing alcohol or witch hazel for three days. Once infused, massage this liquid directly onto the aching joint before bed to draw out the inflammation overnight.

Note: Avocado seeds have a slightly bitter, earthy flavor. The addition of raw honey and cinnamon makes the tonic much more palatable while adding their own anti-inflammatory benefits.
