There is a long-standing wisdom found in many cultures that suggests our homes are not just physical spaces, but environments that hold onto the energy of our daily lives. Sometimes, after a long week or a period of stress, a home can feel a bit “heavy.” In many traditional practices, certain natural elements are believed to help clear the air and restore a sense of tranquility.
A Time-Honored Tradition
One such practice involves using garlic, a staple in many kitchens, for more than just a delicious meal. Historically, garlic has been respected not only for its health benefits but also for its symbolic ability to offer protection and cleanse a space of “negativity” or lingering stress. The ritual is quite simple and uses items you likely already have on hand.
To try this yourself, simply fill a clear glass with fresh water and add three cloves of garlic. Before you turn in for the night, place the glass near your bedside or in a quiet corner of your room. The idea is that as you rest, the combination of water and garlic acts as a symbolic sponge, absorbing the tensions of the day. In the morning, you simply discard the water, mentally letting go of any worries it might have collected.
Embracing a Calmer Environment
Whether you view this as a spiritual practice or a mindful habit, the ritual provides a moment of intention. Itโs a way to consciously decide that your home is a sanctuary for peace. Taking a few minutes to set up this small “cleansing” station can be a wonderful part of a relaxing evening routine, helping you transition into a restful sleep.
Roasted Garlic & Lemon Hummus
To continue the theme of using fresh, wholesome ingredients, here is a recipe for a bright and flavorful hummus that skips the processed additives.
Ingredients
1 head of garlic, roasted until soft
1 can (15 oz) of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
3 tbsp tahini (ground sesame seeds)
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp ground cumin
2-3 tbsp warm water (to reach desired thickness)
A pinch of sea salt
Instructions
Roast the Garlic: Slice the top off the garlic head, drizzle with a tiny bit of oil, wrap in foil, and bake at 400ยฐF for 30 minutes. Let it cool, then squeeze the cloves out.
Combine: In a blender or food processor, combine the roasted garlic cloves, chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, and cumin.
Blend: Process until smooth. If itโs too thick, add warm water one tablespoon at a time until itโs creamy.
Serve: Season with a tiny pinch of salt and enjoy with fresh sliced cucumbers or carrots.
