Watching the videos of Viola freely roaming the streets, locals and passersby were left in awe. Mataya Smith, a witness to this extraordinary spectacle, couldn’t contain her astonishment when she spotted the elephant on the road. “There is an elephant in the road!” she exclaimed. And Josh Hannifin, co-manager of the Civic Center Town Pump, shared his excitement, saying, “It’s not every day you see an elephant walking down Harrison Avenue in Butte, Montana.”
A Majestic and Surprisingly Swift Elephant
As Viola gracefully made her way down Harrison Avenue, one thing became clear: elephants are not only majestic but also surprisingly fast. “Went for a nice slow walk down Harrison. But man, they move fast when they just walk,” Hannifin remarked in amazement.

Despite the initial concerns and confusion caused by the elephant’s unexpected presence on the roads, the situation was resolved safely and efficiently. Handlers from the circus quickly took action and within just 20 minutes, they were able to guide Viola back under their control, without requiring any police intervention. Witnesses praised the handlers for their calm and professional approach, ensuring the safety of both Viola and the onlookers.
Mataya Smith vividly recalled the moment, appreciating the handlers’ gentle and patient demeanor. “They did everything that they could to just kind of guide her. They waited very patiently with her and just kind of petted her and gave her comfort and calmed her until the truck came by.”
Civic Center General Manager Bill Melvin also commended the circus team for their professionalism. He acknowledged, “The circus, of course, is very professional, and they had a professional trainer. It was not nearly as dramatic as you would think.”
