Soothing Peach Leaf Infusion

It is a fascinating part of traditional herbalism that the leaves of a fruit tree often carry a completely different set of benefits than the fruit itself. Peach leaves (Prunus persica) have been valued for centuries, particularly in folk medicine, for their soothing, sedative, and cooling properties. They contain specific glycosides and tannins that are believed to help calm the nervous system and settle an overactive digestive tract.

While the peach fruit is all about sweetness and vitamins, the leaves are concentrated with compounds that act as a gentle, natural “brake” for the body when things feel out of balance.

Soothing Peach Leaf Infusion

To ensure the best flavor and potency, it is important to use leaves that haven’t been treated with pesticides and to avoid boiling them for too long, as this can make the tea overly bitter.

Ingredients

  • 5 to 7 Fresh peach leaves (or 1 tbsp dried)
  • 2 cups Filtered water
  • 1 tsp Raw honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Clean: If using fresh leaves, rinse them thoroughly under cold water to remove any dust or garden debris.
  2. Boil: Bring 2 cups of water to a rolling boil in a small saucepan.
  3. Simmer: Add the peach leaves to the water. Reduce the heat to low and let them simmer gently for about 5 minutes. You will notice the water turning a pale, delicate green or straw color.
  4. Steep: Remove the pan from the heat, cover it, and let the liquid sit for another 5 minutes. This allows the heavier minerals to release into the water.
  5. Strain: Pour the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer into a cup.
  6. Sweeten: Add honey if desired, though the tea has a naturally mild, slightly almond-like aroma on its own.

Benefits

  • Nervous System Calming: Peach leaves have a mild sedative effect, making this tea an excellent choice for reducing evening anxiety or helping with restless sleep.
  • Digestive Soothing: Historically, this infusion has been used to quiet an upset stomach or reduce the sensation of nausea, particularly when related to motion or nerves.
  • Skin Health from Within: The high antioxidant content helps combat oxidative stress, which can lead to a clearer, more radiant complexion over time.
  • Gentle Diuretic: The leaves support the kidneys in flushing out excess fluids and salts, which can help reduce minor bloating or water retention.

Note: Since peach leaves contain very trace amounts of cyanogenic glycosides (common in the Prunus family), they should be used in moderation and are not recommended for pregnant women or small children without professional guidance.
