Smoothing Foot & Elbow Balm

This combination is a favorite in the world of simple, home-based skincare because it pairs a powerful exfoliant (baking soda) with a deep occlusive moisturizer (Vaseline).

When you mix these two, you create a “polishing balm” that is incredibly effective for softening the roughest parts of the body, such as cracked heels, dark elbows, or dry knees. The baking soda gently lifts away dead skin cells, while the Vaseline seals in moisture to prevent the new skin from drying out.

The Benefits of the Vaseline and Baking Soda Mix

  • Deep Exfoliation: Baking soda has a fine, crystalline structure that acts as a physical scrub. It helps break down the “glue” holding dead skin cells together without being as harsh as large salt or sugar crystals.
  • Intense Hydration: Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) creates a physical barrier on the skin. This prevents “transepidermal water loss,” ensuring that the skin remains hydrated and protected from the elements.
  • Brightening Effect: By removing the layer of dull, dead skin cells that can accumulate on elbows and knees, this mixture can make those areas appear brighter and more even-toned.
  • Softening Calluses: For those who suffer from painful cracked heels, this duo works to soften the hardened skin, making it easier to manage over time.

The Recipe: Smoothing Foot & Elbow Balm

This treatment is quite potent, so it is best used on “tough” skin rather than the delicate skin on your face.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly)
  • 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda
  • Optional: 2 drops of Lavender or Peppermint essential oil (for a pleasant scent and extra soothing)

Instructions

  1. Mix: In a small, clean container, combine the Vaseline and the baking soda. Stir them together until you have a slightly grainy, white paste.
  2. Cleanse: Wash the area you wish to treat (like your feet or elbows) with warm water to open the pores and soften the skin.
  3. Apply and Scrub: Apply a generous layer of the paste. Using your fingertips, massage it in circular motions for 3 to 5 minutes. The baking soda will do the work of scrubbing while the Vaseline lubricates the movement.
  4. The “Soak” (For Feet): If using this on your heels, leave the paste on and put on a pair of clean cotton socks.
  5. Wait: Let the mixture sit for at least 20 minutes. For extremely dry feet, you can leave it on for up to an hour.
  6. Rinse and Pat Dry: Wipe away the excess with a damp cloth or rinse with warm water. You will notice an immediate difference in how smooth the skin feels.

A Thoughtful Note: Because baking soda is alkaline, it can disrupt the natural pH of your skin if used too often. It is best to use this treatment only once or twice a week to maintain smoothness without causing irritation.
