Peter Bergman, the beloved actor who played Jack Abbott in The Young and the Restless, recently had to abruptly end his performance due to a serious eye condition. It all started when he noticed something unusual while visiting the central bank of California with his loved ones.
A dark curtain seemed to be rapidly obstructing his vision in his left eye as the night went on. This was a startling experience for Bergman, as there were no prior warning signs or symptoms that would have alerted him to this condition.
Bergman wasted no time and immediately sought medical help. He visited an ophthalmologist who diagnosed him with a detached retina and performed emergency surgery to fix the issue. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and Bergman is now on the road to recovery. He is grateful that he acted quickly and received timely medical attention.
The following morning, Bergman woke up to the realization that something was terribly wrong. His sister arranged for him to see an ophthalmologist in San Luis Obispo, who confirmed that he had a detached retina. The doctor advised him to undergo surgery as soon as possible in his hometown. Fortunately, Bergman’s wife, Mariellen, knew of a renowned doctor in Los Angeles who had an immediate opening.
Bergman made sure to inform his employers at The Young and the Restless about his situation, and necessary arrangements were made, knowing that he would need time off from work. During his recovery, Bergman had to lie flat on his back for 50 minutes out of every hour for a week, which was quite challenging.
Given the nature of his recovery process, which felt like an eternity, Bergman relied on a special gadget provided by Mariellen to watch television without having to move around too much. However, activities like exercising and reading were not possible during this time.
One of Bergman’s greatest sources of support during this experience was his co-star Mishael Morgan, who had undergone the same procedure the previous spring. She proved to be a valuable resource for him, and he absorbed as much information as he could from her.
Bergman, an Emmy winner, is eager to get back to work on The Young and the Restless. He described his eye emergency as a shocking wake-up call, emphasizing the value of sight and the importance of never taking it for granted.
