This traditional topical poultice combines the cooling, starch-rich properties of potato with the sulfurous, circulation-boosting compounds found in onions and garlic. Often used in folk wellness, this mixture is designed to draw out heat and provide a soothing sensation to tired or stiff joints.
The Benefits of This Topical Blend

- Anti-Inflammatory Action: Onions and garlic are both rich in quercetin and allicin, potent antioxidants that can help calm localized swelling when absorbed through the skin.
- Cooling Relief: The high water and starch content in raw potatoes acts as a natural cooling agent, which can be particularly refreshing for joints that feel “hot” or overworked.
- Stimulating Circulation: The mild “sting” or heat from raw onion and garlic juices helps stimulate blood flow to the surface of the skin, aiding in the delivery of nutrients to the underlying tissues.
- Enzymatic Support: Raw potato juice contains enzymes like catalase, which some traditional practices suggest can help neutralize oxidative stress in the area of application.
Root & Bulb Joint Poultice
Because raw onion and garlic can be quite pungent and potentially irritating to sensitive skin, it is important to use a cloth barrier and monitor your skin’s reaction.
Ingredients
- 1 medium potato (red or white)
- 1 small yellow or white onion
- 2 cloves of fresh garlic
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil (to protect the skin)
Instructions
- Prepare the Base: Thoroughly wash the potato and onion. Leave the skins on if they are organic, as the skins contain additional minerals.
- Grate the Ingredients: Using the fine side of a handheld grater, grate the potato and onion into a glass bowl.
- Incorporate the Garlic: Mince or grate the garlic cloves directly into the mixture. Stir everything together until it forms a wet, pulpy paste.
- Protect the Skin: Apply a thin layer of olive oil to the joint you wish to treat. This creates a barrier that prevents the onion and garlic juices from causing excessive redness or irritation.
- Apply the Poultice: Place the mixture onto a clean piece of cheesecloth or a thin cotton rag. Fold the cloth over to create a “sandwich” so the pulp doesn’t touch your skin directly.
- Secure and Rest: Wrap the cloth around the joint and secure it with a bandage or plastic wrap (not too tight).
- Leave the poultice on for 20 to 30 minutes. If you feel any intense burning or discomfort, remove it immediately and wash the area with cool water.
