Roasted Dandelion Root and Chicory Tonic

This robust, dark infusion is a traditional caffeine-free alternative to coffee. It utilizes the bitter compounds found in hardy root vegetables to stimulate the bodyโ€™s natural cleansing processes and prepare the digestive tract for a meal.

The Benefits

  • Bile Production: The natural bitterness of dandelion and chicory roots triggers the release of bile from the gallbladder. This is essential for the efficient breakdown of fats and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
  • Liver Detoxification: Dandelion root contains polysaccharides that support liver function by assisting the organ in filtering toxins more effectively from the bloodstream.
  • Prebiotic Fiber: Chicory root is one of the richest sources of inulin, a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria, helping to maintain a balanced and resilient microbiome.

Roasted Dandelion and Chicory Tonic

This tonic has a deep, slightly smoky flavor that mimics the richness of a dark roast. It is best enjoyed 15 to 20 minutes before a heavy meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon dried roasted dandelion root
  • 1 tablespoon dried roasted chicory root
  • 1 small piece of dried orange peel (for aromatic oils)
  • 3 cups filtered water
  • A pinch of ground cinnamon (optional, for warmth)

Instructions

  1. Place the roasted dandelion root, chicory root, and orange peel into a small saucepan.
  2. Add the 3 cups of filtered water and the pinch of cinnamon.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid.
  5. Simmer the roots for 15 to 20 minutes. Unlike delicate leaves, these hearty roots require a longer decoction to release their beneficial compounds.
  6. Turn off the heat and allow the mixture to steep for another 5 minutes.
  7. Strain the dark liquid through a fine-mesh sieve into a mug.
  8. Serve warm. The flavor is bold on its own, but a splash of unsweetened nut milk can be added if a creamier texture is preferred.
