Overnight Heel Repair Balm

Cracked heels, or heel fissures, usually occur when the skin becomes severely dehydrated and loses its elasticity, causing it to split under pressure. Combining the intensive moisture-sealing properties of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) with a gentle acidic exfoliant like lemon juice creates a highly effective treatment that softens calluses and repairs the skin barrier.

Why This Remedy Works

The success of this three-day routine relies on a process called occlusive hydration.

  • Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline): As a 100% occlusive, Vaseline doesn’t just add moisture; it creates a physical barrier that prevents 99% of water loss from the skin. This “trapped” moisture softens the hard, dead skin of the heel from the inside out.
  • Citric Acid: Adding a small amount of lemon juice provides a mild chemical exfoliation. The acid helps break down the protein bonds holding dead skin cells together, making it easier to smooth away rough patches.
  • Thermal Retention: Covering the application with socks increases the local temperature, which improves the absorption of the emollients into the deeper layers of the dermis.

Overnight Heel Repair Balm

For the best results, perform this treatment right before bed to allow the ingredients eight hours of undisturbed contact with the skin.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of Vaseline (pure petroleum jelly)
  • 3โ€“5 drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 pair of clean cotton socks
  • Warm water and a pumice stone (for preparation)

Instructions

  1. Soak: Begin by soaking your feet in warm, soapy water for 15 minutes. This hydrates the skin and makes the calluses more pliable.
  2. Exfoliate: Gently use a pumice stone or foot file on the cracked areas to remove the loose, outermost layer of dead skin. Pat your feet completely dry.
  3. Mix: In a small container, blend the Vaseline and the lemon juice until they form a slightly cloudy, uniform paste.
  4. Apply: Massage a generous layer of the mixture onto your heels, focusing on the deep cracks. Be sure to rub it in thoroughly.
  5. Seal: Immediately put on the cotton socks. This prevents the ointment from rubbing off on your sheets and forces the moisture into your skin.
  6. Repeat: Follow this process for three consecutive nights. By the third morning, the skin should feel significantly more supple and the depth of the cracks should be visibly reduced.

Note: If you have deep cracks that are bleeding or show signs of infection, avoid using lemon juice, as the acidity may sting. Stick to plain Vaseline until the skin has closed.
