Sadly, this means that Tessa is unable to smell. Tessa’s parents, Grainne and Nathan Evans, discovered her facial deformity during an ultrasound when she was just five months into the pregnancy. It was a mixture of emotions for them, but they were determined to provide their daughter with the best possible care and support.

Shortly after birth, Tessa had to undergo a tracheotomy to assist her in breathing. At eleven months old, she faced another challenge – cataract surgery. And at the age of two, Tessa had some cosmetic surgery to implant prosthetics under her skin, creating a foundation for the future construction of an artificial nose. The operation involved bone and skin grafts, and the hope is that a nose can be constructed for Tessa using a 3D printer in the future.

Living without a nose, Tessa has adapted by breathing through her mouth and experiencing the world without the sense of smell. Some have even referred to her as “Voldemort,” a character from the Harry Potter series who is bald and has no nose. But Tessa, a big Harry Potter fan herself, takes it all in her stride and has even dressed up as the Dark Lord for Halloween.

Her father, Nathan, describes her as someone who can lift the mood and make everyone happy with her presence alone.
