Lindon Beckford, a patient transporter at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, knows the transformative power of music all too well. With a lifelong passion for singing, Lindon uses his voice to bring comfort and joy to both himself and the patients he transports.
From an early age, Lindon found solace in singing. It was a natural way for him to comfort himself in any situation. Little did he know that his heartfelt melodies would resonate with the patients he cared for. As Lindon shared, “I was always singing at work… for a comforting thing. But all of a sudden, I get to realize people were listening to me.”
Realizing that his singing had a positive impact, Lindon made it a regular part of his work routine. With over 30 years of experience at the same hospital, he has become an expert at identifying the needs of anxious patients. He carefully selects songs to alleviate their pain and worries during the journey.
For Lindon, singing is a way to express his love and passion. But for his patients, it means so much more. In one memorable moment, a patient joined in, adding harmonies to Lindon’s song while being transported to the cath lab. Astonished by the unexpected duet, Lindon exclaimed, “It was so amazing… ever since then, that happened a few times.”
Lindon’s dedication to his patients shines through in every note he sings. In moments of confusion, fear, and uncertainty, his singing becomes a comforting presence, assuring them that everything will be alright. It’s this kind of heartfelt support that money can’t buy.
