Mangosteen for Goiter and Thyroid Health

Mangosteen, known as the “Queen of Fruits,” contains a unique class of antioxidants called xanthones (such as alpha-mangostin). These compounds are primarily concentrated in the dark purple peel (pericarp) rather than the white flesh.

Potential Benefits:

Anti-inflammatory Properties: The xanthones in mangosteen have been shown in animal and laboratory studies to inhibit enzymes involved in inflammation. This may help reduce swelling or discomfort in the neck area associated with an enlarged thyroid (goiter).

Antioxidant Support: Mangosteen is rich in vitamins C and B9 (folate). These antioxidants help protect thyroid cells from oxidative stress and damage.

Immune Regulation: Some studies suggest mangosteen can boost the immune system by increasing the production of healthy immune cells. This is particularly relevant for individuals with autoimmune thyroid conditions like Graves’ or Hashimoto’s disease.

Traditional Mangosteen Peel “Tea” Recipe
In traditional practices, the peel is often used because it contains the highest concentration of medicinal compounds.

Ingredients:

Peels of 2โ€“3 fresh Mangosteens: Washed thoroughly.

2 cups of Water.

Optional: 1 teaspoon of raw honey (to cut the bitterness).

Preparation:

Boil: Place the fresh or dried mangosteen peels in a pot with the water.

Simmer: Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 10โ€“15 minutes until the water turns a deep reddish-purple color.

Strain: Remove the peels and pour the liquid into a cup.

Drink: Consume this warm tea once a day.

Important Safety and Medical Advice
Mixed Clinical Evidence: While traditional use is widespread, there is a lack of large-scale human clinical trials to confirm mangosteen as a primary treatment for thyroid disorders.

Potential Side Effects: In at least one documented case, excessive consumption of mangosteen juice was associated with a temporary worsening of autoimmune hyperthyroidism, which normalized once the juice was stopped.

Goiter & Iodine: Goiter is often caused by an iodine deficiency. While mangosteen provides antioxidants, it does not typically provide high levels of iodine. It is essential to ensure your goiter is not caused by a nutrient deficiency that mangosteen cannot fix.
