Guava Leaf Wellness Brew

While often celebrated for its fruit, the leaves of the guava tree (Psidium guajava) have been a staple in traditional wellness practices for centuries. When steeped as a tea, these leaves release potent polyphenols and antioxidants that support various systems within the body.

The Benefits of Guava Leaf Infusion

  • Digestive Support: Guava leaves possess natural antimicrobial properties. They have historically been used to soothe the digestive tract and help maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora.
  • Blood Sugar Management: Several studies suggest that compounds in guava leaf tea can inhibit enzymes that convert carbohydrates into glucose, potentially helping to maintain steadier blood sugar levels after meals.
  • Heart Health: The antioxidants and potassium found in the leaves may contribute to improved cholesterol levels and help support healthy blood pressure.
  • Immune Boost: High in Vitamin C and flavonoids like quercetin, the infusion provides a strong defense against oxidative stress and helps strengthen the bodyโ€™s natural immune response.

For the best results, use fresh leaves if available, though dried leaves also retain a significant amount of their beneficial compounds.

Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 fresh guava leaves (or 1 tablespoon of dried, crushed leaves)
  • 2 cups of filtered water
  • A small slice of fresh ginger (optional for added digestion support)

Instructions

  1. Thoroughly wash fresh leaves to remove any dust or debris.
  2. In a small stainless steel or glass pot, bring the water to a gentle boil.
  3. Add the guava leaves to the boiling water. If using fresh leaves, you can lightly bruise them with your hands first to help release their natural oils.
  4. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for 10 to 12 minutes. The water should take on a distinct yellow or brownish hue.
  5. Remove the pot from the heat and allow the tea to steep for another 5 minutes.
  6. Strain the liquid into a cup and enjoy warm.
