We all like to think that we would do anything to ensure the happiness and well-being of our family members. But as we grow older and start our own families, it becomes harder to drop everything and help a loved one in need. However, there are some extraordinary individuals who go above and beyond for their family, like Chris Punsalan.
Chris is a content creator and musician from the Philippines. His family resides in Nevada, while his 96-year-old grandmother lives in the Philippines. When his grandmother ran out of caregivers, the family considered sending her to live in a care home. But Chris was determined to do something different.
He made the brave decision to uproot his entire life and move back to the Philippines to become his grandmother’s full-time caregiver. Chris had already gained a following online, thanks to his work as a content creator. Little did he know that his decision would go viral. He started documenting his journey by uploading videos, giving viewers a glimpse into his day-to-day life with his grandmother.
Reflecting on his decision, Chris shared, “She took care of me, and I would hate to see her go to homecare, which is where I feel most grandparents go in America. They go to home care because nobody is able to take care of them.” Despite being separated from the rest of his family and making numerous sacrifices, Chris considers himself fortunate to be able to spend so much time with his elderly relative.
Caring for his grandmother comes with its challenges. Chris admits, “To see her forget who I am sometimes and for me to have to remind her… That’s probably one of the more difficult things because it’s a constant reminder that life is very fragile, and it’s very short.”
By sharing his story, Chris hopes to inspire others to cherish their family and value the time spent with their loved ones. He reminds us of the importance of compassion, empathy, and selflessness. We can all learn a valuable lesson from this remarkable individual.
