As we age, we often find ourselves in a world that feels unfamiliar, where even the simplest of objects can evoke a sense of nostalgia. Just like my late grandmother, who used to share stories of her youth and introduce us to peculiar relics, we too may one day reminisce about the past.

One popular online trend that taps into this nostalgia is the “what’s this?” phenomenon. These are the pictures people share in hopes of identifying mysterious objects and uncovering their purpose from yesteryears.

Recently, a peculiar tool has been circulating the internet, leaving many puzzled. At first glance, it resembles an ordinary tree branch with a V shape. However, this unassuming branch has a rich history dating back to the 1500s and a practice known as “Water Dowsing.”

In ancient times, the water dowser went by many names: “diviner,” “doodlebug,” “well witch,” or “water-finder.” Its primary task? To locate water sources!

To operate the water dowser, an individual would hold both branches of the V-shaped stick in each hand, palms facing upwards. The stem of the V, where the two rods meet, is then angled at 45 degrees towards the Earth. The user would then walk back and forth, attuned to vibrations at the bottom of the V, which supposedly indicated the presence of water hidden beneath the ground.

Originally, dowsing with metal rods was used to find metals underground during the 1500s. However, people soon discovered its usefulness in locating water for those living in rural areas.
