This earthy, calming tea is a traditional bedtime ritual designed to signal to the brain that it is time to transition from the busyness of the day into a state of deep repair.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon Dried Valerian Root (chopped): Known as “Natureโs Valium,” it helps increase the levels of GABA in the brain, a chemical that helps regulate nerve cells and calms anxiety.
- 1 teaspoon Dried Passionflower: Traditionally used to quiet the mind and stop repetitive, circling thoughts.
- 1/2 teaspoon Dried Lavender Flowers: Provides a gentle sedative effect and helps lower the heart rate.
- 1 slice of Apple: Adds a natural malic acid which helps the body process the herbs, and provides a soft sweetness.
- 500ml Water (approximately 2 cups).
Instructions

- Prepare the Root: Valerian root is tough, so it requires a bit more heat than delicate flowers. Place the dried root in a small pot with the water.
- Simmer: Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer the root for about 10 minutes.
- Add the Flowers: Remove the pot from the heat. Add the passionflower and the lavender.
- Steep with Apple: Place the apple slice into the pot. Cover tightly to keep the aromatic lavender oils from escaping. Let it steep for an additional 7โ10 minutes.
- Strain and Serve: Strain the infusion into a mug.
- The Ritual: Drink this slowly about 30โ45 minutes before you intend to sleep. In traditional practice, this was often consumed while dimming the lights to prepare the eyes for rest.
Benefits and Target Impact
Reducing Sleep Onset Latency The primary benefit of Valerian root is its ability to help the body fall asleep faster. By interacting with the GABA receptors in the brain, it bypasses the “alert” phase of the evening, making the transition to sleep feel more natural and less forced.
Promoting Deep, Uninterrupted Sleep Passionflower is specifically valued for its ability to prevent mid-night waking. It helps “smooth out” the sleep cycles, ensuring that even if you do stir, you can drift back into a deep state of rest more easily, which is a major concern for those with aging bladders or sensitive hearing.
Calming the Nervous System Lavender and passionflower work together to lower cortisol levels. High cortisol (the stress hormone) is a common culprit for poor sleep in older adults. By calming the nervous system, this infusion helps the physical body relax, releasing tension in the muscles and allowing the heart rate to slow down for the night.
