This steam-infused tea is a dual-action traditional remedy. It is meant to be inhaled while hot before being sipped, providing both external and internal support for the airways.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon Dried Mullein Leaf: Known in folk traditions as the “lung herb,” it contains mucilage that soothes inflamed tissues and helps the lungs expel debris.
- 1 teaspoon Dried Thyme: Rich in thymol, a powerful aromatic compound that helps relax the bronchial muscles and supports the bodyโs natural defense against chest congestion.
- 1/2 teaspoon Licorice Root (shredded): Acts as a natural expectorant and adds a soothing coating to the throat and bronchial tubes.
- 1 slice of Fresh Ginger: Helps to warm the chest and improve circulation to the lungs.
- 500ml Water (approximately 2 cups).
Instructions

- Prepare the Roots: Place the licorice root and ginger in a small pot with the water.
- Simmer: Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes. This releases the heavier compounds from the root and ginger.
- Add the Leaves: Turn off the heat and add the dried mullein and thyme.
- The “Inhalation Step”: Before covering the pot, lean over it (carefully, at a safe distance) and breathe in the aromatic steam for 1โ2 minutes. This allows the thyme oils to reach the upper respiratory tract immediately.
- Steep: Cover the pot tightly with a lid and let the herbs steep for another 10 minutes.
- Strain Carefully: Mullein leaves have tiny, fine hairs that can sometimes irritate the throat if not strained well. Use a very fine mesh strainer or a coffee filter to ensure the liquid is perfectly clear.
- Sip: Drink this warm, ideally in the morning to “wake up” the lungs for the day.
Benefits and Target Impact
Improving Bronchial Relaxation The aromatic compounds in thyme act as a natural antispasmodic. For older individuals who feel a “tightness” in the chest, this herb helps the small muscles in the airways to relax, allowing for a more effortless intake of oxygen.
Soothing and Protecting the Airbags Mullein is unique in its ability to provide a protective layer to the alveoli (the tiny air sacs in the lungs). By keeping these tissues moist and supple, it helps prevent the dryness and irritation that often lead to a chronic, unproductive “senior cough.”
Supporting Deep Oxygenation By helping the lungs clear out stagnant mucus and easing the work of the respiratory muscles, this tonic supports better oxygen exchange. This can lead to improved energy levels, as the heart doesn’t have to work as hard to circulate oxygenated blood when the lungs are performing efficiently.
