Baking soda to the belly button

Understanding the Practice

Applying baking soda to the belly button and covering it with tape is a practice often found in traditional or folk wellness circles. While many people find comfort in these rituals, it is important to understand what this method canโ€”and cannotโ€”do from a physiological perspective.

The belly button (the umbilicus) is a unique area of the body because the skin there is relatively thin and sits over a dense network of blood vessels and vestigial structures.

  • Common Claims: Some believe this practice helps with digestion, bloating, or “detoxing” the body.
  • The Reality: There is no scientific evidence that baking soda absorbed through the belly button can treat internal ailments or “pull toxins” from the organs. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is an alkaline substance; its primary medical use is neutralizing acid, but it must be ingested or administered intravenously for that specific chemical reaction to occur in the blood or stomach.

Potential Risks to Consider

While it might seem harmless, there are a few reasons to be cautious:

  • Skin Irritation: Baking soda is highly alkaline. Leaving it taped against the skin for a long period can disrupt the skin’s natural “acid mantle,” leading to redness, dryness, or chemical irritation.
  • Adhesive Sensitivity: Using tape for extended periods can cause “contact dermatitis” (a localized rash) in many people.
  • Infection Risk: The belly button is a warm, moist area where bacteria and yeast can thrive. Trapping moisture and a foreign substance under tape could potentially lead to a localized infection or “omphalitis.”

A Traditional Application: The “Compress” Method

If you are interested in using these ingredients for topical reliefโ€”such as for a minor skin itch or to help “draw out” a splinter elsewhere on the bodyโ€”a simple paste is generally more effective and safer for the skin than long-term taping.

Soothing Baking Soda Paste

  • Ingredients: 3 parts baking soda, 1 part cool water.
  • Preparation: Mix the ingredients in a small bowl until they form a thick, spreadable paste.
  • Application: Apply to a small area of skin (avoiding the sensitive inner belly button) for no more than 10โ€“15 minutes.
  • Benefits: This can help neutralize the sting of a bug bite or soothe minor skin irritations.
  • Note: Always rinse thoroughly with plain water and pat dry. If the skin becomes red or painful, wash it off immediately.
