Ancient Laurel & Olive Scalp Silk

An ancient and highly effective secret often found in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern beauty traditions is the use of Laurel Leaf (Bay Leaf) and Olive Oil.

While we usually keep bay leaves in the spice cabinet for stews, they contain potent volatile oils like eucalyptol and cineole. When infused into a rich carrier like olive oil, they create a “healing oil” that is traditionally used to soothe a dry scalp, strengthen hair follicles, and even clear the skin.

The Power of the Infusion

  • Bay Leaf: Acts as a natural antiseptic and stimulant. It helps to “wake up” the scalp and can help manage dandruff or flakiness.
  • Olive Oil: Packed with Vitamins A and E, it penetrates the hair shaft much deeper than most modern oils, providing a “moisture seal.”

Ancient Laurel & Olive Scalp Silk

This recipe creates a fragrant, golden oil that serves as a pre-shampoo treatment. Itโ€™s a grounded, slow-beauty ritual that honors the strength of these two ancient plants.

Ingredients

  • 5โ€“6 Dried Bay Leaves (crushed by hand)
  • 1/2 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon of dried rosemary (for extra hair-strengthening benefits)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Leaves: Crush the dried bay leaves into small pieces using your hands or a mortar and pestle. This breaks the surface of the leaf to release the essential oils.
  2. The Warm Infusion: Place the olive oil and the crushed leaves into a small, heat-safe glass jar.
  3. The Water Bath: Place the jar in a small pan filled with 2 inches of water (a “bain-marie”). Simmer the water on the lowest heat possible for 20 to 30 minutes. You want the oil to be warm enough to draw out the nutrients, but never boiling.
  4. Strain: Once the oil has taken on a slightly herbal, earthy scent and a deeper green-gold hue, remove it from the heat. Strain out the leaf pieces using a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth.
  5. Application: While the oil is comfortably warm, massage it directly into your scalp and work it through to the ends of your hair.
  6. The Wrap: Wrap your hair in a warm towel and let the oil sit for 30 minutes.
  7. Rinse: Wash your hair twice with a gentle shampoo to ensure all the oil is removed, leaving behind only the shine and softness.

A Resourceful Tip

This oil isn’t just for hair! If you have tired, aching muscles or dry patches on your elbows and knees, this infused oil acts as a wonderful, warming massage oil. The cineole in the bay leaves provides a very light, natural cooling sensation that helps ease tension.

Storage: Keep your infused oil in a dark glass bottle in a cool place. Because it is a fresh infusion, it is best used within two weeks.
