Ava Sue, the four-year-old daughter of Alfonso Ribeiro, will need time to recover from her scooter accident, but the Dancing with the Stars host says she is doing “great.”

Little Ava had to undergo emergency surgery in May, the day before her fourth birthday, after falling off of her sit-down scooter and suffering significant injuries.

The day before turning four is not the kind of day you desire, 51-year-old Alfonso stated in an Instagram post at the time. I just wanted to express my sincere gratitude to @kareskinmd for the urgent care and surgery that helped reduce the likelihood of scarring. I am so pleased of how courageous my infant daughter was during the procedure.

Alfonso now gave People an upbeat update, saying: “My daughter is doing great,” and that despite the “scary times, scary moments,” Ava is “recovering wonderfully.”

He remarked in advance of a Fourth of July celebration in Washington, D.C., “She’ll be here this weekend and so she’s doing well,” adding, “The process is going as we planned. It’s a really drawn-out procedure. But she’s doing fantastically.

He referred to the event from May and said, “I wasn’t standing there when it happened,” adding, “Our nanny was there so we missed that, but she came in and – obviously – it was immediately that I knew that we were taking her to a doctor.”

Alfonso shares Ava with Angela Unkrich, his second wife, whom he married in 2012. Alfonso “AJ” Lincoln, age nine, and Anders Reyn, age eight, are also their children. He also has a daughter, Sienna, age 20, with his ex-wife Robin Stapler.

The father of four continued by praising his daughter’s tenacity in the face of what he predicted would be a lengthy recovery.

He remarked, “She’s still moving around,” and continued, “It’s technically healed, but it’s a big old scar so you want that to slowly work its way away and that’s what we’re working on.”

“It’s just on its exterior,” he continued. “Therefore, it’s not that significant, but to you, it’s a big matter for your baby.”

Angela, Ava’s mother, posted on Instagram at the time of the incident, saying, “My poor baby. I had a vision or motherly intuition that Ava would end up in the ER today when I woke up, so I told everyone helping get ready for Ava’s birthday party—the family, kids, babysitter, and friends—that ‘we are not doing anything crazy or dangerous today that could potentially end up with an ER visit.’ I genuinely caused everyone to look at me when I spoke these things.”

The day before her birthday, this unfortunate kid slid off a sit-down scooter, she said. “Unfortunately, my comments were quickly forgotten.”

She was a trooper, but it wasn’t a great way to spend your last day as a three-year-old. Extra cuddles tonight for this darling girl,” Angela said.
