Melissa Newman Shares Unseen Family Photos in New Book
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were one of Hollywood’s most esteemed couples. Now, their daughter, Melissa Newman, is opening up about their personal lives in a heartfelt tribute. Her book, “Head Over Heels: Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman: A Love Affair in Words and Pictures,” is filled with never-before-seen family photos and cherished memories.
Melissa Newman sat down with TODAY’s Jenna Bush Hager on October 10th to discuss the release of her book. She shared, “I always say I had a picture of my dad as a cowboy and a picture of my mom as a stripper. At one point, those were the only two family pictures I had.” Despite the unconventional snapshots, Melissa fondly remembers her parents and their unique love story.
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward first met while working together on the Broadway show “Picnic” in 1953. They eventually tied the knot in 1958 and became the proud parents of three daughters. While Melissa acknowledges that her parents’ relationship was complex, she highlights the deep connection they shared. “The picture on the cover of the book is from very, very early in their relationship. You can see how it was a snowball rolling down a hill. They found each other.”
In addition to their successful careers and star-studded appearances, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward embraced a down-to-earth family life. They delighted in simple activities like cooking, fishing, and spending quality time with their children. Melissa Newman fondly remembers her parents’ affectionate gestures and playful moments. “I would watch my father walk by my mother, and he would just do this little pinch. They were very affectionate with each other.”
Despite the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Woodward remained married to Newman until his passing in 2008. Melissa Newman’s book captures the multi-faceted lives of her parents, showcasing their roles as both superstars and loving parents. She reflects, “There was my mother, who was really hands-on when she was home. She knew where everybody was. My dad, on the other hand, wouldn’t have a clue!”
Melissa Newman also sheds light on her father’s self-critical nature when it came to parenting. She recalls, “My father said to me once, ‘You and Raphe broke the cycle of bad parenting.’ That was the biggest compliment he could give me!” Through her book, Melissa paints a beautiful portrait of her parents’ enduring love, which persisted until the very end.
