The practice of placing substances in the belly buttonโoften called the Pechoti Method in Ayurvedic traditionโis based on the idea that the navel is a focal point of nerves and blood vessels connected to the rest of the body. While modern science is skeptical of systemic absorption through the navel, these “old-wives” remedies have been used for generations to treat specific internal imbalances.
The Warming Nutmeg Oil Treatment

One of the most specific traditional uses for the navel was treating chronic diarrhea and abdominal cramping. In many cultures, a thick paste of nutmeg and oil applied to the belly button was the primary “emergency” remedy for digestive distress, especially when the person was too weak to keep fluids down.
Benefits
- Digestive Regulation: Nutmeg is traditionally known as an “astringent” spice that helps slow down overactive bowels.
- Antispasmodic: The warmth of the oil and the compounds in the nutmeg help relax the smooth muscles of the intestines.
- Nervous System Calming: The navel is a high-density nerve area; applying grounding oils here was believed to soothe the “enteric nervous system” (the brain in your gut).
Nutmeg Navel Compress
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg (freshly grated is most potent)
- 2 teaspoons Mustard Oil or Sesame Oil (these are “warming” oils)
- A small cotton ball
- Medical tape or a large adhesive bandage
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix the ground nutmeg and the oil together to form a thick, gritty paste.
- Gently warm the mixture. Do not make it hot; it should just be comfortably warm to the touch to help the “pores” of the navel accept the oil.
- Place a small amount of the paste directly into the navel cavity.
- Soak a small cotton ball in the remaining oil and place it over the navel to keep the paste in place.
- Secure the cotton ball with medical tape or a bandage.
- Leave the application in place for at least 2 to 4 hours, or overnight, while the body is at rest.
- Clean the area thoroughly with warm water afterward to prevent skin irritation.
