Ancient healers often looked to the marshlands for plants that could treat specific “nervous” and “spasmodic” conditions. One of the most famous plants for treating chronic insomnia and nervous tremors is Valerian Root, known since the time of ancient Greece and Rome as a powerful sedative.
Valerian Nighttime Restorative

Valerian was historically called “All-Heal” because of its wide range of uses, but its most specific application was for those suffering from “the vapors” or extreme restlessness. During World War I, it was specifically used to treat the “shell shock” (now known as PTSD) of soldiers and civilians alike, acting as a natural tranquilizer for the overtaxed nervous system.
Benefits
- Sedative Properties: It increases the level of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, which helps reduce nerve cell activity.
- Antispasmodic: Traditionally used to treat muscle cramps and “nervous stomach” caused by anxiety.
- Sleep Quality: Unlike many modern aids, it was prized for helping people fall asleep faster without a heavy “fog” the next morning.
Valerian Root Decoction
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons Dried Valerian Root (coarsely chopped)
- 2 cups Water
- 1 teaspoon Dried Lemon Balm (to improve the earthy scent)
- 1 tablespoon Raw Honey
Instructions
- Place the dried valerian root and lemon balm into a small saucepan with the water.
- Bring the water to a very gentle simmerโdo not let it reach a rolling boil, as high heat can dissipate the essential oils.
- Cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid to trap the steam and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and let the mixture steep, still covered, for another 10 minutes.
- Strain the liquid through a fine-mesh sieve into a mug. The aroma is very earthy and pungent, which is a sign of the root’s potency.
- Stir in the honey while the liquid is warm to help mellow the strong, musky flavor.
- Drink this preparation approximately 30 to 60 minutes before retiring for the night.
