Warming Mustard Knee Poultice

Applying a mustard plaster or topical paste to the knees is a traditional folk remedy often used to ease joint discomfort and improve circulation. Mustard seeds contain allyl isothiocyanate, a natural compound that acts as a “rubefacient,” meaning it warms the skin and draws blood flow to the area to help soothe underlying stiffness.

The warmth generated by the mustard can help relax tight muscles and ligaments around the patella, making it a thoughtful choice for a natural evening ritual.

Benefits of Mustard for Knees

  • Natural Thermics: The warming sensation helps to temporarily alleviate minor aches by increasing localized heat.
  • Circulatory Support: Improved blood flow can assist the bodyโ€™s natural recovery processes in the joint tissues.
  • Ease of Movement: Reducing stiffness in the morning or after a long day can help maintain better mobility.

Warming Mustard Knee Poultice

This traditional preparation uses a barrier to ensure the mustard remains effective without causing excessive skin irritation.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons dry mustard powder (or crushed yellow mustard seeds)
  • 4 tablespoons whole wheat flour (acts as a buffer for the skin)
  • Warm water (enough to create a thick paste)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or coconut oil (to protect the skin)
  • A clean cotton cloth or piece of flannel

Instructions

  1. Protect: Always apply a thin layer of olive oil or coconut oil to your knee first. This creates a protective barrier for your skin.
  2. Mix: In a small bowl, combine the mustard powder and flour. Slowly add warm water, stirring until you have a smooth, spreadable paste.
  3. Apply: Spread the paste onto one half of your cotton cloth, then fold the other half over it so the “mustard sandwich” is what touches your skin. Never apply the paste directly to the skin as it can cause redness or a stinging sensation.
  4. Wrap: Place the cloth over your knee and wrap it loosely with a bandage or a warm towel to hold it in place.
  5. Rest: Leave the poultice on for 10 to 15 minutes. Check your skin every few minutes; if it feels too hot or becomes very red, remove it immediately.
  6. Cleanse: Wipe the area with a damp, cool cloth afterward and apply a soothing lotion if needed.
