Soothing Turmeric Joint Paste

While both turmeric and mentholated rubs are traditionally used for joint comfort, the use of a tampon as an applicator for skin treatments is not recommended. Tampons are designed to be highly absorbent and are intended for internal use; using them as a topical compress can trap moisture and bacteria against the skin in an unhygienic way, potentially leading to skin irritation or infection.

Furthermore, turmeric is a powerful natural dye. Mixing it with a petroleum-based rub and securing it with an absorbent material can cause permanent staining to your skin, clothing, and linens.

A Better Way to Use These Ingredients

To get the most out of these traditional remedies safely and effectively, it is better to create a targeted topical paste that can be easily applied and washed away.

Soothing Turmeric Joint Paste

Ingredients & Tools:

  • 1 Tablespoon Turmeric Powder: Contains curcumin, which is studied for its natural anti-inflammatory properties.
  • 1 Tablespoon Mentholated Vapor Rub: Provides a cooling sensation and acts as a base.
  • Small Mixing Bowl: To blend the ingredients.
  • Old Cloth or Gauze: To cover the area (choose something you don’t mind staining).

Instructions:

  1. Blend the Mixture: In a small bowl, thoroughly mix the turmeric powder into the vapor rub until you have a consistent, bright orange paste.
  2. Test a Small Patch: Apply a tiny amount to the inside of your wrist and wait 15 minutes to ensure you don’t have a sensitive reaction to the combination.
  3. Apply to the Joint: Using a spoon or a gloved hand, spread a thin, even layer of the paste directly over the uncomfortable joint.
  4. Secure with Gauze: Wrap the joint loosely with a piece of breathable gauze. Avoid using plastic wrap or tight tape, as the skin needs to breathe when using menthol and camphor products.
  5. Duration: Leave the paste on for 20 to 30 minutes.
  6. Clean Up: Wipe the area clean with an old cloth soaked in warm, soapy water. If any yellow staining remains on the skin, a little bit of olive oil on a cotton ball will help lift the pigment.
