Using garlic (Allium sativum) for hair care is a practice rooted in its high concentration of sulfur and essential minerals. When applied topically or infused into oils, garlic helps nourish the scalp and strengthen the hair shaft from the root.
The Benefits of Garlic for Hair

- Sulfur and Selenium: Garlic is a rich source of sulfur, which is a structural component of keratin (the protein hair is made of). Selenium works alongside it to boost the health of the scalp.
- Antimicrobial Properties: Garlic contains allicin, a compound with potent antifungal and antibacterial properties. This helps cleanse the scalp of buildup and dandruff, which can otherwise obstruct hair follicles.
- Improved Circulation: The topical application of garlic helps stimulate blood flow to the scalp. Increased circulation ensures that hair follicles receive the oxygen and nutrients necessary for growth.
- Strengthening and Shine: By reinforcing the hair fibers, garlic infusions help reduce breakage and thinning, leading to a fuller, more resilient appearance over time.
Infused Garlic Scalp Oil
Since raw garlic can be quite potent, it is best used when infused into a carrier oil. This method delivers the nutrients effectively while being gentler on the skin.
Ingredients
- 8 fresh garlic cloves
- ยฝ cup of carrier oil (such as extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil)
- Optional: 2 to 3 drops of peppermint or rosemary oil to help balance the natural garlic aroma.
Instructions
- Peel the garlic cloves and crush or finely mince them to activate the allicin. Let them sit for 5 to 10 minutes before the next step.
- In a small saucepan, gently warm the carrier oil over very low heat. Do not let the oil boil or smoke.
- Add the crushed garlic to the warm oil. Let it simmer on the lowest possible heat for about 10 to 15 minutes. The goal is to infuse the oil, not to deep-fry the garlic.
- Remove the pan from the heat and allow the oil to cool completely.
- Strain the oil through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean glass jar, discarding the garlic pieces.
- To Use: Gently massage a small amount of the oil into your scalp for 5 to 10 minutes. Leave it on for an additional 30 minutes before washing your hair thoroughly with a mild shampoo.
